Perhaps, but the people themselves are moving with the government or the government is moving with them farther and farther away from God. Democracy is certainly not and never has been to my understanding, God's Way.

The same might be said of the other parties also, when there is allegiance to men instead of to God.
Remember Saul was and remained a Pharisee, of the highest trained by men, recognized as such,
yet God chose him to be His messenger and Jesus trained him Himself.
So a Democrat or a Republican or an Independent or a Communist or an atheist
can be called by God.
God says in the Old Testament that when His Own People
chose to be like the other nations, they did not reject the Prophet, God's Messenger, no....
they reject God's Ruling over them, they rejected God Himself.
Correct according to the Bible - no where is democracy
supported nor encouraged by Jesus nor in God's Word.....
and we pray "THY WILL ON EARTH, AS IT IS IN HEAVEN"
there is nothing even close to democracy in heaven.

Democracy can be just Mob rule, like it's becoming nowadays Without God, so it has become a mans works foundation and that will only lead to Socialism and then Communism.
Hitler's Germany was a Democracy and he called Man, Gods little Ape, Hitler's position on the world reflects much so with our modern day world that it's truly astounding and not to mention frightening, but most people are just to ignorant to know it. even if I point it out they have no idea that they are in line with his way of thinking, One dude Mick who's political position was much like Hitler's on many points and I would point this out to him, he does not have a clue ! his position on Nazi Germany was what most have been indoctrinated on from school and movies, their understanding of the subject is on a level of a clown, as their is no depth on the subject worthy of talking to them about, as they in their ignorance claim to know more than I do.

This world is not of the Kingdom of God as Jesus pointed out that he was not part of this at all, but that we must enter into the Kingdom of God.
So what we are seeing now is as the Bible points out what will happen.

It would depend on which political candidate or politician you are backing. Maybe the question should be changed to can a real born again Spirit-filled Christian, can they influence the Democrats and Republicans?
If enough born again Christians stand up for what is right, they can have an influence, if enough Christians stand united in prayer instead of attacking them, we could see the lives of Democratic politicians turning around, even Republican politicians turning around, we could see them repent and follow Jesus. Same for Australia, if enough people take a stand, we could see the lives of Liberal politicians, Labor politicians, even Green politicians turn around, same for England we could see the lives of Conservatives and Labour politicians or whatever party politician they have over there turn around, same for any other country.
So to the Christians of all nations Pray for your politicians no matter whether you agree with them or disagree with them.

If it were not for a large percentage of Christians in America that vote, would the U.S.A. not be even more depraved than what it is already? We legalized infant murder in 1972, Homosexual Marriage less than a decade ago, and are on a rapid course to legalize marihuana for recreation in all States. We allow cross-dressing perverts and mentally ill people to "choose" their gender and force taxpayers to pay for hormonal and physical surgeries to supposedly make that "change." We are closer than ever to a form of Government that takes from those that work for what they have, and takes the fruit of their labor through force and extortion, stealing it and distributing it to those that do not work. We have a National Crisis and shut down "non-essential" things... like Churches and worship services; and keep "essential" things open; like liquor stores and abortion clinics!
America started as a great nation because of God, and remained so because of the people being sympathetic to moral causes and individual rights. Christians are to be salt and light, which is always needed to preserve and season society around us. Surely, Christians do have a positive affect, even in a secular society. Whether it helps establish good and godly things, or just tempers a decline, Christian influence still happens.
Personally, I see much of the decline of the past 50 years as a problematic indicator of the state of the spiritual life and effectiveness of the Church, and not so much as a futile effort of the Church in a secular society.

But later on history, Greece became a Christian nation and Italy became a Christian nation.

As I admit to being a political animal (I have a degree in politics) and wrecked the left-wing student union at uni, although I am not American, I have been following things on a daily basis, Over the years I have learnt a few things about politics and society and read several books on politics written by Americans (Charles Colson, Rushdoony, Weber, Piercey etc).
One thing I have discovered is that if you want the government to solve your problems, forget it. You will be disappointed whether they are blue or red.
Two, you get the government you deserve so if it is not the one you want, blame yourself.
Three, God puts people in power and removes people from power although I do realise in America it is limited to two terms. Here in Australia Menzies was in power for 17 years and John Howard was in power for 11 years. Their parties are the equivalent of the Republicans.
So can you be a Christian and be a Democrat? One time I think you could but not now. They have moved so leftward that you would have to espouse policies that are contrary to the Word of God. A classic example is an open slather on abortion. Another is the promotion of homosexuality. Another is the open warfare on Christians and Christianity.
Having said that the Republicans are not as white as the driven snow but it is a case of the lesser of two evils. We are told to pray that we live peaceably with all men. With Christianity that is more likely to happen with a Republican government than a Democratic one. They have declared war even before they have been elected.

If Christians were not effective in this world, we would have never seen the spread of the Gospel as it has happened. Being salt and light has also shaped the morals of nations. To say that Christians have no responsibility for the shape of their nation, is to say that they are of no use in this present world. No one is calling for establishing theocracies, though it is without a doubt that in the 1800's in America, Post-Millennialism was popular and those Christians believed that they had a responsibility to bring their Country closer to bringing in the Millennial Reign of Jesus Christ. Also, Christians in America moved away from Predestinarian Fatalism, opening the door to not just accepting your lot in life as your destiny. Last names as "Carpenter", "Baker," "Smith", Etc., were not determinative. Being born in a social and economic "Class" did not lock you in. Anyone could become the President, or choose an opportunity to be a "lord" in a sense, and be a land-owner... maybe even be wealthy. You could chose a different career than your father. A sense of self-determination made America different than the rest of the world. (I am not endorsing any certain doctrine, but making an observation).
An optimistic Christianity certainly shaped a Nation. It can also be observed where a pessimistic "hands-off" Christianity, a self-centered "personal salvation" Christianity... stays happy with their lot in life, and believes that the world's fate is set. "It's all gonna burn!" is prevalent today. My point is, Christians and Christianity has always had an influence in society, whether it be moving in the direction of positive reformation, or a cynical "We can't do anything" approach. If you truly think that as a Christian, you have no influence, you are probably right (in your sphere.) If you truly think that as a Christian you have an impact with every person you come in contact with, that you can make a difference, you are probably right (in your sphere.)
