Valero says the state has made it impossible to continue
My grandfather was an electrician and helped wire up the Benicia refinery 50 years ago....it was "shell" refinery at the time. It's seen many fires and explosions since. It's also expanded and increased production capabilities.
It's a shame that they are closing it.
California is in trouble in the worst ways. Specifically energy. They don't have enough for the amount of people living there. And now they don't have the fuel to leave either.
They buy most of Texas's electricity....and Texas used to have an overabundance of electricity. Now it's all transmitted to CA. Because California won't build any power plants, they cut off the water so they won't have farming and have been closing family Farms.
So....what's gonna happen to Sonoma Valley? No more avocados, lettuce, grapes, and soon Citrus. I remember when they used to grow everything....from cotton to soybeans and of course tomatoes, corn, wheat, and flowers. The orchards were once some of the finest around. Trees loaded with blooms and then fruit. Walnuts, olives, and almonds too
California is one of the largest states with some of the most fertile soil around. And since now they are going to be shipping in more gasoline....it's going to be too expensive to visit. $6/gal gas is going to be a pipe dream....more like $20/gal.
Now it's a disaster zone with the homeless, crime, riots, and generally inflated prices of everything. $5/vending machine sodas....no thank you.
I remember when Fisherman's Warf had awesome seafood restaurants, seafood shops, local produce stands and great sourdough everywhere. These days you need armed security guards to go shopping. It's not safe. Oakland was the armpit of the state....and the Raiders football team had patches on their eye because they walked to practice.
then there were the racetracks everywhere....amateur racing was really popular.....That was in the '70's....
My old house is now a "mansion" and over a million dollars because it's a luxury neighborhood Ha! Sold it for $44k back in 77.
It isn't that way anymore.
