Why does Jesus say this when being tempted in the wilderness?
He could have said, "I know I don't have to live on bread alone " or, "I don't/won't live on bread alone"
He is God so why should he need to say" it is written?" to get rid of the devil

is this what I then must do?

Personally,LTA...I suggest that you discuss all your temptations with God, and ask him to help you with them.

I can’t stand what I believe to be an “ injustice “ ...I want to react and do something about it...therefore I’m being tempted by the enemy to act on my emotions/ feelings.

I have since learnt, that as soon as I hear those negative temptations coming my way, I rebuke them in the Name Of Jesus and not let them take a strong hold in my mind....does that make sense?

We are learning,Sis..in how God would deal with the situation...try not to be so hard on yourself...you’re under the care of Almighty God.

Although I don't agree with those who say that Jesus is our example, and nothing more, He certainly did live His earthly life in a way that means He is the best Example. As He is fully God, He didn't need to say anything to overcome Satan's temptations. But He did so, partly to indicate to Satan that the temptations were based on falsehoods, but also as an example to His followers, Christians, to follow when they are tempted by the devil.

"It is written" is a translation. It just means "God's word says". Or "the book of the law says". It is a shorter way to say it. You can talk to Jesus and say, I read the bible, and it says this.
Yep. Jesus isn't defining some magic formula for making temptation go away. But He is invoking God's authority.

In case we, and the Tempter, need to be reminded of that.

"But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." Matt 4:4
"So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it." Isaiah 55:11
"Thus speaketh the LORD God of Israel, saying, Write thee all the words that I have spoken unto thee in a book." Jerem 30:2

"It is written..."

If you look at the context of why the Lord said "It is Written", it was in response to Satan's attempts to justify the wrong things to do.

Think of it like when two experienced lawyers try to argue in a court.

There was nothing equal like two lawyers. Jesus had control the entire time. No lawyer equality. It was God against a created being. Satan was created, Jesus was not. There is not a situation where Jesus is not in control. Remember Jesus was there when Satan was created and knew what makes him tick. Give Jesus the Glory as Savior.

It is good to have God’s word in us. If Jesus hadn’t had God’s word in him, then he wouldn’t have known that Satan was misquoting it and he wouldn’t have been able to quote three times from Deuteronomy in order to defeat the temptations of Satan. How can we live by every word that comes from the mouth of God if we don’t know God’s word?

Of course, we already know that. That's why He's able to quote the exact Scriptures. The Scriptures contain His own Words.

The lawyers analogy was just to help the OP understand what was going on in the text.

Using your own argument, God could have just squashed Satan by challenging God with regards to Job. But God didn't do that, did He?

Its the semantics to overcome Satan and defeat Him at Jesus's crucifixion. Since Satan is the god of this world, Jesus demonstrated it to principalities and dominions in heavenly places.

Ephesians 9:15 - and to make all see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden in God who created all things through Jesus Christ; 10 to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places, 11 according to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord,

Colossians 2:15 - Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.

Jesus said, “It is written…” in response to Satan’s temptations to show us that the written Word of God is our ultimate authority and defense against lies, deception, and spiritual attacks. Though He is fully God, Jesus was also fully man, and in His humanity, He modeled how we are to stand firm, not by feelings, opinions, or clever arguments, but by Scripture. In Matthew 4:4, when tempted, Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 8:3, saying, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” That wasn’t just a statement about food, it was a declaration that God’s truth is more essential to life than physical sustenance.

Jesus could have spoken in His own authority and crushed Satan instantly, but He deliberately chose to respond with Scripture. Why? Because He was setting the example for us. He knew He would leave us with His written Word, the Bible, and that we would need to know it, stand on it, and use it to recognize truth from error (John 17:17 – “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth”). He wasn’t just resisting temptation, He was showing us how to do it ourselves.

Yes, that is exactly what we must do. When the enemy lies, when false teachers twist Scripture, when confusion arises, you go to what is written. That is how you know truth from deception. The Bible is God’s revealed truth, not someone’s personal opinion (2 Timothy 3:16–17). Jesus didn’t leave us to guess. He gave us His Word as the sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17), and we are called to wield it just as He did, with boldness, clarity, and confidence.
