Why does Jesus say this when being tempted in the wilderness?
He could have said, "I know I don't have to live on bread alone " or, "I don't/won't live on bread alone"
He is God so why should he need to say" it is written?" to get rid of the devil
is this what I then must do?
Jesus said, “It is written…” in response to Satan’s temptations to show us that the written Word of God is our ultimate authority and defense against lies, deception, and spiritual attacks. Though He is fully God, Jesus was also fully man, and in His humanity, He modeled how we are to stand firm, not by feelings, opinions, or clever arguments, but by Scripture. In Matthew 4:4, when tempted, Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 8:3, saying, “
Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” That wasn’t just a statement about food, it was a declaration that God’s truth is more essential to life than physical sustenance.
Jesus could have spoken in His own authority and crushed Satan instantly,
but He deliberately chose to respond with Scripture. Why? Because He was setting the example for us. He knew He would leave us with His written Word, the Bible, and that we would need to know it, stand on it, and use it to recognize truth from error (John 17:17 – “
Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth”). He wasn’t just resisting temptation,
He was showing us how to do it ourselves.
Yes, that is exactly what we must do. When the enemy lies, when false teachers twist Scripture, when confusion arises, you go to what is written. That is how you know truth from deception.
The Bible is God’s revealed truth, not someone’s personal opinion (2 Timothy 3:16–17). Jesus didn’t leave us to guess. He gave us His Word as the sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17),
and we are called to wield it just as He did, with boldness, clarity, and confidence.
