Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is bad, your body is full of darkness. Therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness. If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright, as when a lamp with its rays gives you light.” ~ Luke 11:34-36
Dear bdavidc,
Well said, but do you understand that only a converted believer has the ability to understand God's Word? An unconverted "babe" has no such ability.
God's Word teaches that there are two types of believers:
The
first type of believer is a person who has been
called to be a saint (a babe). They are "many" in number and they are unconverted.
The
second type of believer is a person who has is a
saint. They are "few" in number and are converted.
Mat 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen.
A person becomes a believer (babe) when Christ gives them the
Early Rain of the Spirit, however, it does not convert them because the Spirit is given in "measure" (
Joel 2:23). As a result, the Early Rain of the Spirit leaves a babe
carnally minded and spiritually blind. In this condition, the spiritual teachings of Christ will remain
concealed from their understanding. This type of believer "can only draw milk" (Christ and Him crucified",
1Cor 2:2). The churches of the world are full of this type of believer and that is why there is very little unity of truth within those churches. They are places where the blind lead the blind.
Have you ever noticed how Paul addresses his letters to the churches?
Rom 1:7 To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints (unconverted babes): Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.
1Cor 1:2 Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, (unconverted babes), with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:
Eph 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints (converted Elect) which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful (unconverted babes) in Christ Jesus:
The saints are the chosen believers (the Elect) who have been given
both the Early and Latter Rains of the Spirit. They are converted and are no longer babes. They have become "little children" who Christ is now maturing into a perfect man of full age.
Mat 18:3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Consider this scripture below:
Isa 28:9 Isa 28:9 Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? Them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts (the converted Elect). 10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little: 11 For with stammering lips and another tongue (spiritual language) will he speak to this people. 12 But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they (the unconverted babes who draw milk) might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken (by Satan).
Because babes are unconverted, spiritually blind and carnally minded, they have little ability to understand the spiritual teachings of Christ (knowledge and doctrines of the New Covenant).
Since the death of Paul (
Acts 20:29-31), all the babes have fallen away from faith and have been taken by Satan.
Christ describes the spiritual process of becoming an apostate believer in the scripture below.
Mat 12:43 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walks through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. 44 Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he finds it empty, swept, and garnished. 45 Then goes he, and takes with himself SEVEN other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.
The spiritual symbol of an unclean spirit represents a spirit which teaches Satan's false truth through lies and deceptions. Since a new
believer (a babe) remains spiritually blind after receiving the Early Rain of the Spirit, they cannot replace their worldly false beliefs with the truth of Christ. ONE unclean spirit leaves but comes back with SEVEN more. The number "seven" represents perfection. In this case, the number seven represents the perfection of Satan's lies/deceptions which come to a new believer when they are indwelt with the
spirit of anti-Christ. Now, instead of ONE unclean spirit within the person, they now have EIGHT. The number eight is a spiritual symbol which represents a new spiritual condition. In this case, the new spiritual condition is worse than the first.
This "worse than the first" spiritual condition causes the believer to become a False Prophet, a Man of Sin, a Minister of Satan and a Seven Headed Beast with Ten Horns & Crowns.
What you stated in your post is true, however, Christ must heal a believer's spiritual blindness first or they will have a very limited ability to understand and receive Christ's spiritual teachings. The "type" presented by Paul's conversion teaches this truth, as well, as the "type" presented by Christ in Mark 8:15-25:
Mark 8:15 And he charged them, saying, take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod. 16 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, it is because we have no bread. 17 And when Jesus knew it, he saith unto them, why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened? 18 Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember? 19 When I broke the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say unto him, Twelve. 20 And when the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? And they said, Seven. 21 And he said unto them, how is it that ye do not understand?
In the verses above, Christ is giving His disciples a lesson on the spiritual language of God's Word - His language.
At this point in time (before they were converted at Pentecost), the disciples had received the Early Rain of the Spirit but had not yet received the Latter Rain of the Spirit. And because of such, they were still spiritually blind and could not understand the spiritual teachings of Christ.
Christ ends His comments above by asking the disciples this question: “How is it that ye do not understand?” No response from the disciples is recorded in scripture. However, Christ answers His own question in the very next four verses.
Mark 8:22 And he cometh to Bethsaida; and they brought a blind man unto him, and besought him to touch him. 23 And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him (this represents the Early Rain of the Spirit), he asked him if he saw ought. 24 And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees, walking. 25 After that he put his hands again upon his eyes (this represents the Latter Rain of the Spirit), and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly.
Christ made this statement to the Apostles concerning when they will understand the truth that He had been teaching Him:
John 16:12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. 13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth (Latter Rain), is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

The Holy Spirit's guidance is essential for readers to grasp the profound truths and nourishing wisdom hidden within God’s Word.
This is very true but it does take both the Early and Latter Rains of the Spirit for a person to be able to receive "the profound truths and nourishing wisdom hidden within God’s Word".
I had been in the church for most of my life and thought that I had a correct understanding of Christ's New Covenant teachings - but after Christ gave me the Latter Rain of the Spirit, I realized I knew almost nothing. My conversion testimony is on my website (shown under my member name) if you care to read it.
