Jesus did not come to destroy the law. But rather, Jesus came to fulfil the law. As written in Matthew 5:17.

Matthew 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

What is the law that Jesus came to fulfil? The law that states that all sinners must die and perish. As written in Ezekiel 18:20 and Romans 6:23.

Ezekiel 18:20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

What does it mean to destroy the law? For the law to be destroyed, God has to cancel the law in Ezekiel 18:20 and Romans 6:23, allow sinners to go unpunished (without receiving the wages of sin) and let unjustified sinners enter Heaven.

What does it mean for Jesus to fulfil the law? Jesus has to take all our sins (the sins of the entire world for every generations so that salvation is offered to everyone who accepts Jesus as their saviouras written in 2 Corinthians 5:21 and 1 John 2:2) and die with our sins on our behalf (Full payment can only be fulfilled with death, as written in Hebrews 9:22).

2 Corinthians 5:21 For he (God the Father) hath made him (Jesus) to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

1 John 2:2 He (Jesus) is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

Hebrews 9:22 In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

How do we know that all our sins have been remove by Jesus' death?
If Jesus does not have enough capital to pay for our sins, then he still be in debt and will still be carrying our wages (The wages of sin is death). If Jesus is still carrying out wages, he will still remain dead. But Jesus DID NOT stay dead. Jesus died, was buried and resurrected on the third day. As written in 1 Corinthians 15:3-4.

1 Corinthians 15:3-4 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures

Not only did Jesus rose from the grave, Jesus even sat on the right hand of God. If Jesus is unable to pay for all our sins, he will not be able to even enter Heaven or be in God's presence.

Hebrews 10:12 But when this priest (Jesus) had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins (death on the cross with all our sins), he sat down at the right hand of God

Revelation 21:27 Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

Jesus paid for our wage of sin which is death. Through death Jesus destroyed death. Having cleared of all our sins, we direct access to God in our time of need.

Ephesians 2:18 For through him (Jesus) we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.

Hebrews 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

I think that God's law is summed up in one word 'LOVE' - and Jesus came to show us how to love God and each other and also how much God love us. With that sort of love no other law is necessary. Imagine the world if we all loved each other as God loves

Jesus did not come to destroy the law. But rather, Jesus came to fulfil the law. As written in Matthew 5:17.

For Jesus to be our "one time perfect eternal sacrifice" He had to live as a human, under the law, and never sin... so that by doing this, He "fulfilled the law" in OUR Place, as we didn't....= we sinned and broke the law.

So what God does, is He accepts what Jesus has completed.......and based on what Jesus has completed God esteems it unto us, as if we did it.

One of the ways to think about this is.........

A.) The Cross of Christ is a Divine Exchange, whereby Jesus becomes our sin, and dies for it all....

Notice......>>"God hath made Jesus to be SIN for us".....

And we are given....... Christ's Rightesousness, as if we lived it.......and this is "The Gift of Righteousness", whereby every BELIEVER born again, has become "the RIGHTEOUSNESS of God, IN Christ".

Thank you for the post and question.

Pearl has it right: Love is at the center for Christians and is based on the essence of the law.

Recall the Jesus said that on the two great commandments (Love God and Love Your Neighbor) hang all of the law and the prophets. So, for example, Commandments 6 - 10 say you should never intentionally harm your neighbor (or even think about it). Thus, this must be one characteristic of Love Your Neighbor. Or, as Jesus might tells us (and certainly showed us), always be gentle and peaceful toward your neighbor.

Peace.

17 “Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. 18 For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. Mathew 5:17-19

Very specific and very true. Judaism still exists and the Jews still exists and Mosaic Law still exists….for the Jews.

This question came up when the Apostle Paul went to Jerusalem to address the issue of the Gentile-Christians following the Mosaic Law.

15 Certain people came down from Judea to Antioch and were teaching the believers: “Unless you are circumcised, according to the custom taught by Moses, you cannot be saved.” 2 This brought Paul and Barnabas into sharp dispute and debate with them. So Paul and Barnabas were appointed, along with some other believers, to go up to Jerusalem to see the apostles and elders about this question. 3 The church sent them on their way, and as they traveled through Phoenicia and Samaria, they told how the Gentiles had been converted. This news made all the believers very glad. 4 When they came to Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church and the apostles and elders, to whom they reported everything God had done through them. 5 Then some of the believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees stood up and said, “The Gentiles must be circumcised and required to keep the law of Moses.” 6 The apostles and elders met to consider this question. 7 After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them: “Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe. 8 God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us. 9 He did not discriminate between us and them, for he purified their hearts by faith. 10 Now then, why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of Gentiles a yoke that neither we nor our ancestors have been able to bear? 11 No! We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are.” 12 The whole assembly became silent as they listened to Barnabas and Paul telling about the signs and wonders God had done among the Gentiles through them. 13 When they finished, James spoke up. “Brothers,” he said, “listen to me. 14 Simon has described to us how God first intervened to choose a people for his name from the Gentiles. 15 The words of the prophets are in agreement with this, as it is written:

16 “‘After this I will return
and rebuild David’s fallen tent.
Its ruins I will rebuild,
and I will restore it,
17 that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord,
even all the Gentiles who bear my name,
says the Lord, who does these things’—
18 things known from long ago.

19 “It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God. 20 Instead we should write to them, telling them to abstain from food polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from the meat of strangled animals and from blood. 21 For the law of Moses has been preached in every city from the earliest times and is read in the synagogues on every Sabbath.”

The Council’s Letter to Gentile Believers
22 Then the apostles and elders, with the whole church, decided to choose some of their own men and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They chose Judas (called Barsabbas) and Silas, men who were leaders among the believers. 23 With them they sent the following letter:

The apostles and elders, your brothers,
To the Gentile believers in Antioch, Syria and Cilicia:
Greetings.
24 We have heard that some went out from us without our authorization and disturbed you, troubling your minds by what they said. 25 So we all agreed to choose some men and send them to you with our dear friends Barnabas and Paul— 26 men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 Therefore we are sending Judas and Silas to confirm by word of mouth what we are writing. 28 It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements: 29 You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality. You will do well to avoid these things.
Farewell.
30 So the men were sent off and went down to Antioch, where they gathered the church together and delivered the letter. 31 The people read it and were glad for its encouraging message. 32 Judas and Silas, who themselves were prophets, said much to encourage and strengthen the believers. 33 After spending some time there, they were sent off by the believers with the blessing of peace to return to those who had sent them. Acts 15:15-33

As we see here at the meeting between Jewish-Christians and Gentile-Christian there are only four items that they should observe….common sense items that are to concern Gentile-Christians.

Another way to consider the Law of God being fulfilled (especially for those who are not versed in the scriptures), is that when Jesus said while dying on the cross, "It is finished", all that was lost at the fall in the garden of Eden, was regained for those who receive it.

Christ fulfilling the Law, means he Kept the Mosaic Law in all it's Ordinances applicable to him. It means he reaped the rewards promised in Deuteronomy 28. By Grace through Faith apart from Works, we reap his reward; and as our Substitute, he reaps our Deuteronomy 28 Curse...

Simply stated; him fulfilling the Law, means he Kept the Law. Christ destroying the Law means that when the Law is fulfilled, it passes away. We are Widowed to the Law of Moses, and are free to Marry another; the Law of Christ...

Hebrews 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

What most do not understand is that the Hebrew language is a verb based metaphoric language. They really do not have nouns like English does.
So
When we come to the 4th Commandment....Remember the Sabbath Day and keep it Holy. Most people do not understand what it really is saying.

It is a major article of the Contract between Israel and God that describes the end of the contract in that it is fulfilled and complete.

(Sabbath means "cease/stop" as well as 7th or ending) Also of importance is it is a singular and not plural. There is no collective singular in the Hebrew language.

The word "Remember" is also a literal call to action.
And so because the word "day" is used its a reference that it is also a specific time that the Covenant is over and done.

Just shortly before Jesus was arrested after the Last Supper he declared "I will not taste the fruit of the vine until this baptism is completed" its an abbreviated form of the Nazarite vows....an additional covenant of holiness. The hair removal signifies the start or end of that vow.

Since Jesus is God....
He was the one who walked the blood path in Genesis with his contract with Abraham. Meaning that once Jesus had died on the cross his covenant with Abraham was completed as well, Which is why Abraham was filled with dread.

However, Jesus's death also instituted a New Covenant....not with blood of sheep or bulls. But with his own Holy Blood.

And not to make light of those from the old covenant....because those of us from the New Covenant and those from the Old, TOGETHER are the Righteousness of God.

This is why....
All of the Old Covenant was there to demonstrate and foreshadow we needed an ultimate sacrifice for sin...Jesus fulfilled that sacrifice.

**Since I'm not getting much in the way of response. Apparently people are not understanding what I'm saying. Please feel free to ask honest questions.

1 John 3:7
Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

James 1:22
But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

1 John 3:7
Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

So, you dont understand that this verse is not saying that if you do good deeds, you are "righteous".

Let me explain.

Lets say that a Christian gives to the Poor, today.
And then, an Atheist gives to the same poor person, even more money.

So, both the Believer and the Hell Bound Unbeliever, have now done a good deed, a righteous deed for the poor.

What is the Difference?

A.) NOTHING.........as our deeds are never righteous.

So, when you read a verse that says that we must be "righteous as HE (God and Christ) are Righteous".. and yet, that is impossible, of ourselves.......then the verse means what?

A.) it means that to be EQUAL to God, regarding God's Righteousness that God Requires, = you have to be given God's Righteousness by God Himself.

= Welcome to : Salvation

Its the place where God gives a SINNER, .. who BELIEVES.....= "The Gift of Righteousness'.. as "the imputed righteousness of Christ".

So, THAT is the only way to become "Righteous, as HE is Righteous".... so, if you are trying to get there by BEHAVIOR, then you have failed forever., already.

To me personally this statement is one of the most important statements made by our Lord and Savior Jesus

I really do believe that the Gospels show and express that Jesus was reading directly from a Hebrew Manuscript as he was explaining his message - "" with Hebrew texts..... "

we remember that is Mat 5:18 - Jesus spoke to the multitudes saying - "For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass away from the law, till all be fulfilled."

And Luk 16:17 ----- it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail.

Jesus was speaking and explaining, declaring with deliberate focus "" that not “ one jot nor one tittle “ would pass away from the Law –

if we notice, If he was reading from a Greek Septuagint Text and quoting and supporting a Greek text, why would he be looking at and describing the JOTS and TITTLES that he was teaching from ?

The jot is a Hebrew letter, and the tittle is a small mark to distinguish between Hebrew letters. A tittle announces the Verbs. (third - person singular simple present Ect...

And a Jot is the smallest Hebrew letter.... If Jesus used the Greek Septuagint, his scriptures that he was describing would not have contained any jots and tittles.

I believe that Jesus spoke of the Hebrew scriptures as “ FROM the HEBREW Torah that he himself was directly reading from “ - and not Greek. jots and tittles - do not exist in the Greek Language.

The JOTS AND TITTLES STILL EXIST TODAY - and have not been destroyed nor have passed away from the basic laws of scripture, we can look to the Hebrew manuscripts and see - literally - The JOTS AND TITTLES / VOWEL MARKINGS IN HEBREW STILL MAKE THE LAW OF GOD VERY CLEAR.

I Praise His name and thank Him for His enduring word.
He is coming to fulfill his word

The expression 'the Law' was used to mean several things. The five Books of Moses were referred to as 'the Law' At other times the whole collection of Hebrew Scriptures were known as 'the Law'
'The Law' is also understood as specifically meaning the decalogue. At other times it was coupled with 'the Prophets', subsequently, the Law and the Prophets.

Strictly speaking Laws are obeyed as fullfillment is an ongoing process. If you obey the traffic law of 60 miles an hour today it does not mean you are exempt from obeying it tomorrow. Yes, having have fulfilled its requirement for this particular stretch of the road, does not exempt you from a 60 mile speed limit further down the track. In other words, the demand of the Law is an ongoing demand. Another example would be, 'don't steal'; this one will never come to an end.

Prophecy on the other hand is fulfilled. Once the prophecy reaches what it has prophesied it is fulfilled. It does not reoccur unless there is a multiple application intended in the prophecy.

In the light of this, understanding Jesus saying, 'I did not come to destroy the law. But rather, to fulfil the law' will depend on context. What is it that Jesus fulfilled that found its completion in him? Wasn't it Prophecy? What Prophecy? Wasn't it about a coming Messiah?

What does it mean for Jesus did not come to destroy the law. But rather, Jesus came to fulfil the law?

In essence it means ManKINDS “FREEWILL”, continues that man can hear, learn, accept, reject, be with, be without God during and beyond their Bodily Life’s duration.

Gods Law was initially Given and Accepted by “a Few”.

Fulfillment of A Law, meaning having Accomplished What the Law “Requires”.

Gods Law, “bottom line” requires…
A mans Free Willingness…
To Heartfully Believe in the Lord God;
To Trust That Belief;
To Confess that Belief; (from the mans Word)
Pay the Price ( TO the Lord God) of his Body To Become exclusively DEAD unto the Lord God, in confirmation of the Mans Word of True Heartful Belief.

Human men…make “deals” between and amongst themselves all the time.

Order, ways, terms are Laid out.
One Offers, the other by his WORD and SIGNATURE Agrees, which legally BINDS, and seals the Deal.
FREEWILL of individual to Accept or Reject.

Gods Offering Requires a mans WORD and Signature , Bodily Life, To Legally Bind and Seal the Deal.
FREEWILL of individual to Accept or Reject.

Jesus (ManKinds Example), was Sent for ManKIND “To “ literally “SEE” with human eyesight, HOW To Accomplish A legal, forever Lasting, Deal with God, according to Gods (terms)…ie Order and Way….
And, the Result, thereof.

Glory to God,
Taken

the fulfilling of the Law in my personal view is one of the causes of stumbling to many people,

sometimes we expect the Law Of God to be fulfilled in a way that we understand and expect when In fact I need to remember that His ways are not my ways

Isa 55:7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

:8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
:9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Anyone who rejects the Commandments is of Satan in fact !
Everything of the OT is Gods Law in fact ! if you take away any one of the Commandments you are of Satan in fact !

When Jesus came he finished the Commandments off with top Icing on the cake one could say, it was finished !
So with the two that Jesus said they are above all of the rest in fact ! for that changes the OT totaly ! as it's not seen in the same way as a carnal person will see it, or that of a OT beliveing Jew in fact ?

Holy Moses said of who was to come ! and Christ Jesus has come in fact !
So wher the Jews were only under the schoolmaster it was for them to progress until the Day of Salvation came, then the worthy people of God would be set free from the schoolmaster and live a life of abundance in the Holy Spirit in fact !

The Shoolmaster has gone. because the Lord and Saviour has opened the way for all ! who abide in him = his Body, the Church !

So Gods OT Law still exist as it once stood but it has been changed totaly because of the Icing is Grace and that is the Key to understanding that we are not under the Law ! but God's word is not to be mocked because such is of the Holy Spirit ! so not one jot is to be rejected at all form the OT Law !
Remember the OT Law is Not coming from the old possition of one who is without Grace ? Big difference ! huge in fact ? but the religious carnal Man is just as lost as the Jew if not more so ?

God is not Love ! God is the Standard ! that are Set like concrette ! Jesus is Emanuel Salvation with us ? he is our Lord and Saviour but we must abide in him ! or he is not our Lord ? one can not serve 2 Masters in fact !

Now Religious carnal may claim that Oh you made a Sin or Sins ? so as if that will make you not worthy of Heaven ? but that is typical of religious carnal fools, Jesus knows you better than you know yourself in fact, so as he says he knows you, you are his and no one can not snatch you out of his Hand !
Religious carnal think that, they can set the rules of who goes or not ! and claim only Heaven or Hell ? but what about they who do not deserve to go to Hell ? or Heaven ! that's were most go in fact ? Moses was their and all of the OT Saints !
You can not go to Hell and excape !

Jesus said that he did not come to change one jot of the OT Law in fact ! but the Jews thought he was, why because they were only Religious Carnal fools ! They were under the works of Man in fact and not truly worthy of God in fact !
You need Grace to be worthy of God ! and Christ Jesus is who give one Grace in fact !
Outside of abiding in our Lord and Saviour, one has no Grace in fact !
You must be truly born again to be Saved in fact !

St Stephen exposed them leading the Jews for what track they were on was wrong, in the Book of Acts exposes this totaly ! and they killed Stephen ! but all knew that he had the face of an Angel ? and Saul woke up and became Paul !

No one fulfills the Law, they respect such as a guidance to be not getting off Track.
What is the first and number one Law ? if one rejects that then one is clearly of Satan in fact ! sure to be sure !

One thing to remember is how Herod wanted to kill baby Jesus and when King Herod was tricked by the wise men he ordered all of the baby male children of Bethlehem to be killed. The Priests and Rabbis were at the mercy of King Herod who hated Jesus and hated his followers.

The Priests and Rabbis were trying desperately to save their Kingdom and temple and felt that they had no choice or alternative but to work with Herod in stamping out Jesus and all of his followers and destroy his teachings.

The Jews, The Priests, Rabbis, Leaders and the very Jewish people felt that they had no choice but to betray Jesus and his followers.

The choice for many Jews was to either reject Jesus and his followers or face the horrors of being terrorized, murdered, attacked and destroyed, themselves. Their children and very family’s lives were all at stake.

To the Jews who rejected Jesus, the choice was very simple.

They determined or thought that if the Jews were to stop following and believing upon Jesus – then there would be peace and their lives would be saved and their families would not be murdered.

Herod had control over the Priests and Leaders of Israel and set up Priests and Leaders who were loyal to him. In their mind, giving Jesus to the
Roman government would ensure that their culture, their lives and their families and future would be safe. The Romans / Canaanite Italians were playing mind games with the Jews. On one hand Rome was hunting down Jesus and his followers to kill and imprison them – Rome even hunted down baby Jesus when he was a baby as Herod pretended to have respect and adoration for him – but when Herod was tricked by the wise men – Herod went about slaughtering little children from the town were Jesus was born.

– ROME had persecuted and tormented and terrorized the Jews AND HAD SO MUCH CONTROL AND POWER OVER THE JEWS -
that the Romans held full power over the Jews to manipulate them as a crowd and push them over the edge to publicly and verbally condemn Jesus.

It was the Roman soldiers who were hunting down and terrorizing the Hebrew families and murdering their children to attempt to kill Jesus, It was a mob of Roman soldiers pressured the priests to locate, isolate and identify Jesus -

It was a mob of Roman soldiers who arrested Jesus and Roman Soldiers who forcibly brought Jesus to be tried in court by Pontius Pilate

It was a mob of Roman soldiers who spat upon him, ripped out his beard and who slapped him, beat him and whipped him nearly to death - and It was a mob of Roman soldiers who nailed him to a tree and stabbed him in the side ending his life

Herod pretended to have respect and adoration for Jesus, just to end his life, in the same manner Pontius Pilate pretended to have no fault with him
after Rome had spent 30 years hunting him down, killing little children to end his life and killing all of the followers of Jesus, harassing and terrorizing the Jews and imprisoning them,

suddenly - Pontius Pilate claims that he finds no fault with him ? - this is the way Satan works........

If Rome had found no fault with Jesus why did they spend nearly 12 hours torturing him to death. ?

the point was to make a point to the Jews, this is what happens when you attempt to follow the scriptures and serve God and deny the power of Rome and her authority and her gods.

Their children and very families lives were all at stake, the only option
was to stop Jesus from building his ministry as his apostles and disciples were being hunted down tortured and killed and imprisoned by Rome.

Yes - the Jews at the trial could have kept silent but they were at the point to where protecting their families demanded that they showed publicly to denounce and condemn Jesus.

I try to put myself in their place and imagine a terrorist military
beating down your door and hacking your newborn baby into pieces, all you have to do is identify the local troublemaker and your children and families will be safe again.

I hope this is something we all can consider in defense of the Hebrew people whose God came in the flesh as a stumbling stone directly to them.

Isa 8:14 And he shall be......... but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a trap / - hook and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
