John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

This is a glorious verse. From this verse we can learn the love of God. We can learn that it is Christ Jesus who saves us unto eternal life. We can learn that our trust and faith is placed in Jesus.

This verse however, does not convey the cross.

John 3:18 KJV 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

What this verse, often not included, does say, is believing in him is to believe in his name.

John 20:31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

1 John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

[Luke 24:47 KJV] 47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

[Acts 10:43 KJV] 43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.

Peter and the apostles preached faith in the name of Jesus for the remission of sins and eternal life not the cross.

Matthew 16:15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Israel had to believe that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of God for eternal life.

Matthew 26:28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

Jesus told his disciples that he must be killed and that he would rise again (Matthew 16:21). Jesus told them that he would shed his blood for the new testament. At this time, it was revealed that his blood was for many, not all; the many was Israel (Isiah 53:4-6 8).

Hebrews 9:15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

Jesus suffered the death of the cross to redeem Israel from the sins they committed under the old testament. The death of the testator was necessary to put in force the new testament (Hebrews 9:17).

Paul preached that by the cross, salvation unto eternal life was provided freely to all by the sacrifice of Christ (Romans 3:22-24). Paul preached that Jesus died for our sins.

Paul preached the gospel Jesus revealed to him and which we are to believe (Galatians 1:11-12):

1 Corinthians 15:1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
15:3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
15:4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

John 3:16 and the preaching of all twelve apostles is the foundation of Paul's gospel and our salvation:

Ephesians 2:20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;

Psalm 33:21 For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name.

We also have trusted in the name of Jesus.

I think there is more to the gospel than just this. Don't we have to learn how to conduct ourselves in heaven?

JOHN 3:16 IS THIS OUR GOSPEL?

Yes, I believe that John 3:16 applies to all believers, not only because it says so (that "whosoever", which in Greek reads "all"), but because the need to trust the Son of God is embedded into both Jamesian and Pauline theology.

There is no cross no blood in John 3:16...that was for all who believed that Jesus was Christ the Son of God,,,,this was before the cross,,,,they had to only believe on his name as seen in John 3:18

Okay; so what do you see as the significance of that? What changes?

I would say that the Cross (which is embedded in the words "gave us" anyway), and the fact that Jesus is the Son of God, these are reasons WHY we should trust in Him, WHY we should trust in all that He is and all that He has done for us.

JESUS is the object of our trust. Not our theological beliefs ABOUT Jesus. We trust JESUS. Do you see what I'm getting at?

For me I believe in him is to trust that what he promised he will fulfill by believing his redemption for eternal life

To believe on his name for me is to know him and his redemption

For Israel they only had to believe in his name which meant they only had to believe he was Christ the Son of God

Hmm. The name "Jesus" (in Hebrew, "Y'shua") means "YHWH saves".

Someone's name is a Hebraism meaning one's reputation, i.e. everything said about him. To believe in Jesus's name means trusting Him not only as Messiah and Son of God, but also as Lord, and as Savior, because that's who Messiah is and that's what Messiah does. The disciples trusted Jesus AS A PERSON. They trusted Him enough to leave their homes and their jobs and even their lives for Him. The time may be coming in the very near future where you and I and everyone here who is called "by His Name" may have to do the same.

Belief in Jesus is all that is initially required for eternal salvation.

Luke 23:42-43
42 Then he said to Jesus, "Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom."
43 And Jesus said to him, "Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise."

It was different for all of us. We have the Bible. READ it! It tells us all we need to know. Whoever truly seeks God will find the Kingdom of God.

How were persons saved BEFORE the gospel Doug?
It's always been by grace through faith,,,,by believing God
God gave them commandments and by faith did them....they believed the sacrifices would pardon their sin,,,their forgiveness was always based on the blood of Christ but not revealed til Paul
