What kind of husbands do you girls have? Lol! Chopping wood is the mans job.

The only reason a woman ever chops wood, is if she wants to.

I used to say that women don't mow grass either, that's the man's job.
But one day I came home from work one day and the house was quiet. Where is she? I looked out the back window and there she is in the back yard, mowing the grass....!

Whoa. My heart melted. No one told her to mow the grass, she was just doing it. I grabbed my camera to save the moment! I took her picture mowing the grass and somehow, this picture turned out to be the single most sexy picture of any woman that I've ever seen before! I still have that picture around here somewhere, lol! :jest:

After I got pregnant as a teen, my parents were basically nomadic and pushed me to live on a farm with the father's family.

Part of me staying there was earning my keep by helping out with cleaning, cooking, hauling wood, building a fire, working in the garden, etc.

I never took part in the hunting, but in my youth where I come from, fishing, crabbing, seafood related activities were taught by my stepfather because he training me in life skills.

I only had a meltdown at clam digging with that family. Now I'd happily do it with people I like and probably enjoy it, but how badly I wanted out of it at the time was insane. That was the tipping point.

I'd take back the goats any day though. The goats loved me and one would wait by the door all night for me to come out and he would follow me like a dog. I loved that thing.

Interesting inputs.

So many different options for Heat and Light, and of course …
The Factors of Safe burning, Availability and Cost.

We use coal…(buy some, make some)…well vented, ( not in house ), only for Forge.

We use wood…open outdoor pit…(cut stock supply, hundreds of trees, mostly pine, some hard)…and wood stove…(no blower, least efficient for heat)…(primarily shop and garage).

We use electricity, ( furnace, lights, some appliances, small heaters, fireplace, one clothes dryer, flash lights recharge, radio local update alerts.)

We use propane, large tank, (piped and multiple smaller tanks,) (furnace, several small heaters, cooking stove, 2nd cloths dryer.)

Main house elevated high, wood floors, cabin elevated, wood floors, garage, ( concrete floor no windows, with smoke / vent, charcoal filter / elec. blower system /) out buildings combo, wood, concrete , dirt floors.

Generator, (outside of buildings) hard piped, hard wired, ( through grid, but to only feed Our supply). Keep tank stock of gasoline to feed Gen. (In emergency, or implements, vehicle)…same with diesel.

Heat Tape wrap for Water Pipes…Three main, and Half a dozen off lines (purged, shut off in freezing spells). Winter garden, layered with mulch. Keep Same Water feed during cold. (mulch will protect plant above ground…roots will warm water under ground).

Keep stock of Flash lights, batteries, matches, candles, (small radio with battery).

Have a small kerosene stove, antique, don’t fill with fuel or use for heat…(just looks).

No natural gas Available in our area for Piping for heat, appliance use.

Kerosene seems only available in small Quantities…1-2 gal. Cost, per gallon, higher than propane. (does have a clean burn…(ie “white gas” / naphtha) but Not worth effort for us.

Yes…plenty of Warm clothing, warm foot, hands, head coverings…and blankets.

Summer temps can quickly soar to 110*…
…Yesterday-Noon Time was 70*…Sunny…. breezy…2:00 Stormy, Hard Rain, Drop to 60’s, Strong Winds…4:OO… no rain, Sunny, breezy, low 60’s*.
5- 6:00 temps dropping.
…This AM…6:00 —-forward…Temp 26* (feels like 16*) Windy, Gusts, bitter cold. sun rising…blue sky, few Clouds.
Temps daytime 32*~ 40* predicted …more rain for following Days, Over night Freezing temps, Cold, and possibly snow, freezing rain, hail.

Animals have ground sawdust, straw bedding, enclosure, cuddle for body heat, and elevated platforms…extra feed…(keep check on water “freezing” issue). Dog indoors, beds, cubby, blankets.

No issues (so far) of Water freeze or elec. outage…. But Winter has just begun!

Hope y’all are well prepared…keep warm…and have food supply and no need to travel.

Do you y’all Thank God for this extreme weather? We do…. Unknowing of Gods intent..

God Bless.

Last month I heard in the spirit, "Get heat tape. You will like it."

Well, I didn't because I didn't know what heat tape was. I looked it up but I couldn't figure out what it was for.

Now our kitchen pipes keep freezing. Should I have listened? Is that what it is for?

If so, I might get some now.

Husband…Wife….traditional “jobs”??

We both do…all the same household and property maintenance chores.

Our height difference is 1 foot…and body strength different…so we just switch back and forth of who is the primary and who is the helper.

When a job, because of circumstances, is only one working a chore…the taller stronger simply gets done quicker, while the shorter, weaker, alots more time to accomplish a task.

We “plan” together…(what we want to accomplish each day)… and have the fore knowledge, of who will be primary or helper and prepare accordingly.

Works well for us.

At $15 to $25 bucks a quart (around here) it's way more expensive than propane. But if you check around at gas stations some carry kerosene at the pump for about 5 or 6 bucks a gallon. Just make sure it is K-1 Kerosene.

I didn't know Speedway sold kerosene. I thought the green pump on the side was diesel but it was K-1 kerosene. I only use it in lanterns and it's not totally odorless but pert near.

I haven't chopped wood in probably close to 20 years.

Thank goodness
I have a close friend that when I first met her, she was chopping wood. She has five children and was alone taking care of them. My husband went to put a heating and air system in her home. Up until that point she heated only with wood. My friend and I are complete opposites. She is tough and resilient. I was going through my first introduction to an MS diagnosis. Her strength amazes me. Her oldest daughter has cerebral palsy. Amanda can chop the wood, drive the tractor, chop a chickens head off and still be tender enough to carry her daughter from the wheelchair to the toilet. She was a blessing to come into my life because she taught me resilience and to be less whinny when I needed a more positive outlook. There is no point to sharing this with you, except while reading your threads and what topics you are interested in…you remind me so much of her.

Heat tape is a wrap for exposed water pipes above ground…. And requires electricity or battery use.

We have a few Above ground main water lines…for House, RV, Garden…we wrap…to keep them from freezing and bursting pipes or connections.

You can get at reputable hardware or online, and review online how to use.
If you suspect freezing weather and have no heat tape… you can protect your house pipes…during freezing temps…
By allowing one sink in your home To be turned on …to a drip or VERY small dribble stream.
It is the water freezing…expands, that causes the pipe, cracks, breaks, havoc.
Keep a check on the temps…and shut off as temps rise above freezing.
Also would suggest, doing that only in a sink with an overflow hole…typically, a bathroom sink…rather than kitchen sink or bath tub.

(vehicle engines have anti-freeze additives and some have availability of an (elec) plug in device to keep the block of the engines (Water) from freezing, expanding and cracking.)

Aw thank you. I am not that strong LOL but everyone has their challenges and as whatever way God pulls them through, he knows what he is doing. It's his desire that counts.

I knew I should have listened. I saw pictures of it over the houses and I thought, "there's no way I am going up there." lol

Okay now I will order them. God is never too late. Thank you.

Have never seen a station offering a kerosene pump…only gasoline or diesel….and other stations for propane.

Agree, I guess that is what makes me think of my friend. I do believe God brings people into our lives that help us grow, and we help them grow.

I hate kerosene heaters by the way. It looks like maybe you have already moved passed that idea. We have used them briefly during outages due to snow and ice. But the fumes are horrible and give you a headache. i know you said you hate chopping wood, but I grew up with a wood stove. I loved it. Never chopped wood though. I remember momma having a kettle of water always going on top to help with moisture. The cat tried jumping up on the wood stove once…I remember that was a bad idea. It never did that again.

I remember going to buy kerosene when I was a kid and we went to the gas station. So when I started buying oil lamps I started calling gas stations because I dont remember seeing kerosene at gas stations since I was a kid. It turned out that my gas station sold it and it was a green pump, like diesel pumps. And it is K-1 kerosene so I lucked out and I prolly have kerosene for years now at the rate I'm using it!

Look closer at the green pumps! Or ask the girl at the counter. It's around.

I wouldn't count on that method of running a sink to keep water moving and not freezing...

Why? It only works until it gets so cold, then it freezes anyway. I can't count how many homes I've been to with icebergs in the sink and the whole house frozen!! Toilet bowls freezing up and cracking the toilet! No Sir! Have you ever seen a frozen water fall? Oh, you have. So you know what I mean!

And I've never ever seen a decent battery system heat tape to be reliable. Batteries die. Get the plug in kind! And you have to wrap the pipe. I used like 1 wrap per 2" of length of pipe. I've seen many homeowner heat tape jobs where they just lay the heat tape on the pipe straight and tape it up. Whoops, not when it's -15 deg outside!

That's the first thing I tried before getting some round ones! The flat ones work...ok. Not great but merely ok. I got better results with 3 normal size candle wicks braided together, but still not as good as the round wicks.
Where do I find a woman like that?

Used to live in the North… temps in teens and below. Spouse grew up further North… 20-40’ s below… we don’t get that cold here…so the water drip method…for a few days ok…if need be….unlike further north extreme cold that can last weeks…. There moreso like a frozen water stream can happen.

I hate kerosene heaters by the way. It looks like maybe you have already moved passed that idea. We have used them briefly during outages due to snow and ice. But the fumes are horrible and give you a headache.

Getting headaches is a good indication that CO might be being produced by the fuel burner in your house. If this is the case, then get your heater appliance checked out to "retune" it so that it stops producing CO.

Many years ago, the RSPCA, in the city I live in, had a gas oven specially designed and built that produced CO to humanly euthanize unwanted cats and dogs. The CO would cause the cats and dogs to initially quietly fall asleep before they succumbed to the CO poisoning.

This is also what happens to people who have been overcome with CO poisoning.

Indirect heating of a house when using a fuel burner to heat the house is best. That means that the best location for the fuel burner, is installing outside of the house envelope itself.

In a cold climate heating a house is important, not just for the comfort of the people who live in the house but to stop condensation from forming in the house which then brings on mould. This mould can also be detrimental to the wellbeing of the house occupants. That means that any water vapour has to be vented from the house as well before it can condensate on the walls and ceilings of the house. This means that the air temperature cannot go below the dew point of the flowing air through the house. Remember that one primary source of water vapour comes out of the mouths of the people inside the house.

This subject matter is much bigger than keeping people comfortable within the house. There are many things to consider, all at the same time.
