I'll stick with dogs
Sorry,I’ve had dogs, who can stink up a house far more than a cat..

If you don’t regularly bath a dog, they stink rotten.

I’ve cleaned many a house with dogs and cats.. I would argue that their dogs stank worse than cats...especially those who weren’t regular at bathing their dogs.

I've known some cat owners who allowed their cats to destroy furniture, curtains, shred toilet paper and paper towels... poop and pee on beds, on floors, mark furniture and walls, jump on tables ......NASTY!!

I'd have my little "stinky" dog over that mess any day. He is unselfish, loving, attentive, (mostly) obedient, and doesn't fight me or fuss when I bathe him. He loves car rides, and trips to the feed store. He loves to play ...and he's 13 years old. He doesn't tear up the house, or poop and pee in the house. He asks to go out to potty. He's protective of me, too. His main flaw is that if he gets out of the house without a leash, he runs and he won't be back for an hour. (Frustrating!) But who can blame him?! I just bathed him ...and he stood there without one fuss. I did 2 washes and a conditioner ...towel dry, and then snuggles, pets, lap time, and play time. ❤️ And he didn't get aggressive like cats do when you "play" with them. He just showed lots of affection and "thank yous."

When I have a rough day, he shows genuine concern and gets in my lap, gives little "kisses" and even cries with me. Then he does something totally cute and funny and makes me laugh. What a blessing!

I used to be a cat person ...but now, after seeing unruly, nasty, selfish, and aggressive cats ....I could do without them. I do have 3 outside cats. They all came as strays and I named them, care for them, feed them, etc. But cats in the house .....NO! I had cats in the house in the past. They were house trained (no litter box needed). They knew the word "no" and obeyed it (although stubborn and sneaky, would try the bad behavior of jumping on the counter a few days later). They knew their name, too.

Cats can be taught, but you have to be diligent because of their stubbornness and that their priority is not pleasing you, but getting what they want. Period. Cats are selfish. Dogs are loyal. Huge motivation difference.

Each to their own.

I have never experienced in my whole life what you have with cats @TLHKAJ ..and I’ve cleaned plenty houses with cats and dogs in...

Never seen or heard of anything like you explained...if I get an animal, I will adopt a cat.

I think it all comes down to the owners. Some people shouldn't have pets if they won't care for them properly.

Some man across the street adopted one of Miss Kitty's kittens which she had while on the street as a stray.

Another man and I kept telling the guy that he needed to get the kitten neutered before six months old or else it will learn to spray! We kept reminding the guy...the other man even gave the man money to pay for neutering!

Long story short....he never neutered the cat and he got mad at the cat spraying!!! I never knew the guy had mental issues or I wouldn't have let him take the kitten. He already had a cat so I thought he was ok.

All I could do was pray for the cat...I felt bad. I couldn't report him because I never saw the abuse firsthand. And the other man who knew about the abuse was afraid to report the guy.

All of Miss Kitty's other kittens were adopted by wealthy people because my animal rescue friend took them to find homes for them.

I've had six cats over my lifetime since 1989. And used to feed about 12 strays cats. All of them were good, gentle cats.

I really think it comes down to how they are treated and cared for.

Sis, I have cleaned some houses with dogs...as soon as I opened their front door, the stench hit me, they let them lie on their sofa, well, if they don’t keep them clean, the sofa will stink..plus the carpets.

I can honestly say that all the houses that had cats, I never smelt any urine ,neither have I seen any wrecked homes, like you say, you teach a cat manners at an early age.. the only thing I will say, they can bring in mice and other things like birds, frogs.

Yes, it does come down to how they're cared for ...but their nature doesn't change. lol

And speaking of stinky ....this may get gross, but lemme point something out. If a cat poops or pees in your garden, stuff dies! If your dog hikes a leg on your dying gardenia, it starts turning green in a matter of days. Ask me how I know!! I take my little guy around to all my ailing flowers, ornamental grasses and bushes and he doctors then right up! LOL!!

Trust me, female dogs that pee in your garden stuff dies also, my female chihuahua used to pee on my grass..brown spots all over it, killed the grass, I ended up getting rid of grass, had shingle put down.

Short commentary @Debp .

The first thing to know is that dog pee killing grass is completely natural. Because dogs naturally have nitrogen in their pee from the normal breakdown of proteins, when it hits the grass it can 'burn' the area they pee on.

Tomcats scent-mark their territories by spraying urine, which can scorch foliage. Damage to the bark of trees and shrubs, caused by cats scratching, can be another form of territorial marking. Cats have a habit of sunbathing in inconvenient places, sometimes crushing plants in the process.

That's odd to me. Maybe it was specific to her... a physical health issue or her diet. My dogs get a lot of protein, and I avoid grains in their food. My cats either hunt or eat kibble. They're pretty picky... I try getting them the really good stuff but they want the crap food. (sigh) I still try giving them meat and eggs and milk when they're in the mood. But ..... picky.

A long time ago, a man across the street let his cat go in and out of his window. He was the manager and lived on the first floor.

He said his cat would bring him mice! I can't remember if they were dead or not!

Tomcats scent-mark their territories by spraying urine, which can scorch foliage. Damage to the bark of trees and shrubs, caused by cats scratching, can be another form of territorial marking. Cats have a habit of sunbathing in inconvenient places, sometimes crushing plants in the process.
Tomcats aren't neutered so they will spray and yowl up a storm!

My cat Crystal....got him when his elderly owner died. Crystal was walking down the sidewalk, a tiny kitten in the rain. Some girl picked him up and handed him to a lady in a church van. So that's how Crystal ended up in my apartment building.

The lady died before her husband. So I was taking care of Crystal when the husband was in the hospital. Then the husband died. I adopted Crystal because the apartment manager was going to throw him out on the street!

The man told me Crystal was 11 when I was taking care of him...if correct, he lived with me until 23 years old! Most cats die about 17 or so.

Ziggy, Zack, Matthew, Luke, George and Harry.
Each one has their own personality, habits and attitudes.

Ziggy, well mannered, quiet, gets along with everyone yets like to be to himself.
His spot on the bed is at the outside or my elbow with his back to me.

Zack, has aggressive moments with the other cats. Likes to chew my fingers when I try to pet him.
Hates Harry and will bully him every chance he gets.
His spot on the bed is by my feet.

Matthew, he is a big boy. Waddles when he walks. He talks a lot. Gets along with all the other cats except Harry who he always hisses at.
His favorite pass time is digging all the cat litter out of the box and spreading it over the floor.
I think he secretely likes to watch me sweep the floor.
His spot on the bed is right behind my back or near my head, where he uses my forearm as a scratching post.

Luke is schizophrenic. Scared of his own shadow. Screams like a girl when the other cats look at him.
Very shy and keeps to himself. He gets along with Ziggy the best.
His spot on the bed is by my stomach. If I'm on my side he will snuggle in the crook.

George is curious, gets into everything. Has to be the first to have the attention or he gets jealous and will attack the other cats.
He is the only one that gets along with Harry. First one out in the morning, last one in at night.
He sleeps on my shoulder along my arm and purrs in my ear all night.

Now Harry, he is from a different litter. He is cousin to the others, and even after 8 years of living under the same roof, they just won't tolerate him at all.
Harry I think if he was an only cat would be very friendly, but due to the other cats he spends most his time in hiding, or if he goes out stays out for days. Now that winter is here he has made his hangout in a bedroom closet, where I might catch a glimpse of him in the middle of the night sneeking a midnight snack.

All of these cats are feral by nature. Their mom Ginger gave them to me when they were born to protect them from the other animals when I lived in Florida. She brought them all into the house, weaned them and then left.
When I moved to Maine I had 10 cats and a dog I took with me.
Elizabeth, the only girl, when she found she could get away from all the males, fled to the wilderness never to be seen again.
Reese chose to make his own way in the world and one day he just never came back.
Carter somehow got himself wedged under the base of the sink cabinet. I couldn't find him for days. And when I finally found him he was expired.

My Dog Lady was a rescue dog from a neighbor who had no idea how to terat another living thing. So I took her for my own.
She passed away a few years ago with some form of blood cancer.

So now it's Me, Dad and 6 cats. They are getting on. They don't climb the trees anymore. They half heartedly swat at the butterflies.
Occasionally George graces me with a dead mouse or a dead bird.
Luke brought me a living chipmunk a couple months ago. That was fun chasing around the house.

They are my kids. They keep us company and entertained. And before dad came to live with me, they was my reason for getting up in the morning and taking care of them.
Otherwise I would still be sleeping.

Since I was born my family has always had cats. I had over 20 when I lived in Florida. I got them all spayed, neutered and shots.
Dogs weren't a part of my upbringing, living in Boston in a small apartment didn't make that possible.

But through the years I've had 4 dogs. A Red and white Husky named Samantha, A Samoyan name Shadow, A Shitzu named Milo, and Lady who was a pit shepherd mix.

The house don't stink unless I neglect the litterboxes. I have 3 that I change weekly.
Matthew is the one that keeps me on my toes with that though. Every morning he makes me sweep the floor.
I have more cat claw puncture marks on my arms and legs that a sieve has holes.
And George keeps reminding me I need to buy ear plugs so I can get a good night sleep.

I love my cats. They are my kids.
:D
Hugs

My dogs only had the best food, plus all of my dogs were in perfect health, well exercised , not taken for a small walk around a block, many owners are lazy when it comes to exercising their dogs,....that’s another reason why some dogs have health problems, a dog is a huge responsibility..plus did you read the commentary I posted?

I’ve also fostered dogs in my time, plus walked many rescue dogs..

Yes, when I had a Shih Tzu, between mom and me, he got many walks a day. Even a very late night walk. Because we are apartment dwellers.

So when I got my first kitten, Amber, from our street, when Shasta died I stuck with cats.

Even the "best foods" often have grains and fillers in them. It's disgusting. Or maybe it's the dog ...because everything my dog pees on perks up and turns green! lol
I feed him a lot of protein, zero grains. Dogs aren't meant to eat grains ...neither are cats. I give them organic/pasture raised eggs and often meat as well.

I went by my vets advice, on what to feed my dogs, they are the professionals.not by an owners research....I only go by their advice.

I would like to witness with my own eyes what you say about your dog, not going by what you say...sorry.

Wow, so now I'm a liar? I can take photos but you still wouldn't believe me. I can show how that my gardenia was dying and is more brown on the back area where he can't reach it, but green toward the front where he pees. I can take a photo of him peeing on it. But that's kinda gross! lol
I can take a photo of the day lily that he pees on as compared to the one I have a hard time getting him to pee on. One is perked up and green and the other is yellowing and dying ...which they normally do die back this time of year. But that is what alerted me to it, because I discourage him from going on my flower pots, and would direct him to the in-ground plant (day lily) instead. I noticed it was doing amazingly as compared to the other one. So I decided to take him to my ailing gardenia to see if it would revive if he peed on it. Well .. so far, it's helping a lot. Idk what proof you want other than photos. This is weird. lol

I didn't call you a liar, @Ritajanice. I just am puzzled by the opposite experiences. I know cats kill plants. My experience with my dog has been completely opposite of what happens if a cat goes on any plant.

For heavens sake, I said I would like to see how your dog brings everything to life when it pees on your plants...I don’t take your word for it...whose calling you a liar...if I went up to the police and told them your story, they’d want evidence...LOL.

All you seem to want to do on quite a few threads is argue, I’ve seen you do it also with a male member as well.

Good day, being around you is such a negative experience, especially if others don’t agree with you, you take it personal.then start trying to make a mountain out of a molehill.

Praying for you.
