I am amazed at how lack of Bible study some folks are about what the Revelation Mystery Babylon is. It is a CITY per God's Word...

Rev 17:3-6

To understand in God's Word why God would apply the Babylon Harlot label to Jerusalem for the end of this world, one should study Ezekiel 16 where God teaches about Jerusalem's original state as a pagan city of the Jebusites, which David was given to conquer and rename. God used many analogies about Jerusalem like a woman that He healed, cleansed, dressed her nakedness, put jewels upon her, and married her.

Then Jerusalem played the 'harlot' against Him He shows, referring to the times when the children of Israel went a whoring after idols and pagan worship.

Thus the idea of JERUSALEM for the END when the coming false-Messiah arrives there for the time of "great tribulation", and starts up worship of himself there in place of GOD, that is why Jerusalem in that near future state of false worship is named - "MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH" (Rev.17:5).

The Roman Empire didnt exist to be guilty of the Prophets blood seen below, Jerusalem did.

Jesus was, of course, crucified in Jerusalem. I personally see Rev 11 as being Jerusalem, and Rev 17 as Rome. But I could be wrong.

Jerusalem is definitely playing an endtime role. But after Jerusalem in the OT era, Rome played a big role, as well. Of course, much of the Scriptures and OT Prophecy was concerned with Jerusalem because at that time only Israel was God's People. But in the NT era, it is Roman Civilization that became, in a sense, the "New Israel."

I personally believe that God will return to favoring Jerusalem. But if there is a Millennium, it will take place at that time. So in the present age, both Jerusalem and Rome are "bad guys," or faithless cities. Obviously, we have some agreements and disagreements. Thanks.

Yes, it is a city, but it is a SPIRITUAL city, not an earthly one. It is the SPIRITUAL opposite of the New Jerusalem. If it was an earthly city, what would be mysterious about it? Nothing.

As for Revelation 11:8, are you aware that Jesus was not crucified in Jerusalem?

John 19:20 This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.

Hebrews 13:12 Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.

People make assumptions about the great city Babylon without doing their due diligence by digging deeper to discover its identity. Babylon is Babylon, not Rome or Jerusalem. It is a spiritual city.

Revelation 18:2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. 3 For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies. 4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.

What earthly city is or could ever be "the hold of EVERY foul spirit, and a cage of EVERY unclean and hateful bird"? None. Mystery Babylon is clearly a global spiritual entity and not an earthly entity like Jerusalem or Rome. Yes, both Jerusalem and Rome have things in common with Mystery Babylon, but neither are Mystery Babylon. It says that Mystery Babylon is "the mother of all harlots". Both Jerusalem and Rome are harlots, so Mystery Babylon is the mother of both the harlot Jerusalem (representing those who reject Christ and believe in the false religion of Judaism) and Rome (representing oppressive rule and the false teachings of the Roman Catholic Church).

When it says "Come out of her, my people" in relation to Babylon it reminds me of this passage:

2 Corinthians 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? 15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? 16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you. 18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

Babylon is the spiritual city that literally all unbelievers are spiritual citizens of just as all believers are spiritual citizens of the heavenly new Jerusalem (Hebrews 12:22, Galatians 4:26).

Yes there will be a literal future evil human man, and he will be present on this future earth and destroyed by the Lord at his future coming in the heavens

Both of these centers reflected the bilateral Roman imperial tradition. And they both became Christian. Ultimately, in the West it came to be called the Holy Roman Empire. In the East, it became something else. Today, we call it "European Civilization." And yes, it is based on Christian tradition.
