A movie like China Doll could not be made today.

A drunk misanthropic army captain accidentally purchases a Chinese bondservant. She just happens to be lovely, humble, and selfless.

Su Jen, played by Li Lihua, is my role model. Do I think mega watt smiles while scrubbing floors is natural? No. But the effect on the screen is magical.

I want my daughter to listen and cooperate with a good attitude. First, I believe she must see me do it at home. More is caught then taught.

I used to see service as a value for the gullible souls who would be taken advantage of. Now I know there's true greatness in it. No matter how small or basic or unseen a task is, when done with love, it's tremendous.

But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister:

And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.

For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

Mark 10:43-45 KJV

@Wynona It's amazing the things you'll find out later that your children noticed and choose to model in their adult lives. Last Thanksgiving, we were visiting our grown children and two sons-in-law. My middle daughter has 2 sons ages 1 and 3. When it came time to eat, everyone was lining up to fix their plates. My daughter fixed plates for herself and the boys. But I noticed that she left her plate quite often to tend things with the boys. She was so busy, she ended up eating her plate of food cold about an hour after everyone else. I noticed. Later, she told me that when they were growing up, she always noticed that I fixed everyone else's plates first (even their daddy's) and then fixed mine, but that I was always busy serving everyone till I was the very last to eat after everyone had eaten. She said she admires that and has chosen to model that servanthood. I never noticed or considered it outstanding at all. It's just what I did. But I was humbled at my daughter's words and amazed to see her happily modelling what she saw me doing when she was a child.

Thank you for sharing this!!

Even now, the way my ten month old daughter watches me is very humbling. It's a big calling to live well in front of her.
