Do you possess it?

Where does it come from?

Was self control a weakness before you became Born Again or was it a strength?

Afraid it was a weakness for me , I was a complete and utter nut job....only the Holy Spirit can give me self control ....he’s still working on it.

Praise God!!

QUESTION

The Fruit of the Holy Spirit – What is self-control?

412teens fruit Holy Spirit self-control
audio

ANSWER

The last characteristic listed in Galatians 5:22-23 as a fruit of the Spirit is self-control. The fruit of the Spirit is the change in our character that comes about because of the Holy Spirit’s work in us. We do not become a Christian on our own, and we cannot grow on our own. Philippians 2:13 says that "it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure." Every good thing we do is the fruit of the Spirit’s work in our lives.

Self-control (“temperance” in the KJV) is, of course, the ability to control oneself. It involves moderation, constraint, and the ability to say “no” to our baser desires and fleshly lusts.

One of the proofs of God’s working in our lives is the ability to control our own thoughts, words, and actions. It’s not that we are naturally weak-willed. But our fallen nature is under the influence of sin. The Bible calls it being a "slave to sin" (Romans 6:6). One definition of sin is "filling a legitimate need through illegitimate means." Without the power of the Holy Spirit, we are incapable of knowing and choosing how best to meet our needs. Even if we knew what would be best, such as not smoking, another need, like comfort, would take precedence and enslave us again.

When we are saved by Christ’s sacrifice, we are free (Galatians 5:1). That liberty includes, among other things, freedom from sin. “Our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin” (Romans 6:6). Now, as the Spirit gives us self-control, we can refuse sin.

Believers need self-control because the outside world and internal forces still attack (Romans 7:21-25). Like a vulnerable city, we must have defenses. A wall around an ancient city was designed to keep out the enemy. Judges at the gates determined who should be allowed in and who should remain outside. Soldiers and gates enforced those decisions. In our lives, these defenses might include avoiding close relationships with sinners, meeting with other believers, and meditating on the life-giving Word of God. We don’t exhibit self-control if we continually dally with that which would enslave us.

Self-control naturally leads to perseverance (2 Peter 1:6) as we value the long-term good instead of the instant gratification of the world. Self-control is a gift that frees us. It frees us to enjoy the benefits of a healthy body. It frees us to rest in the security of good stewardship. It frees us from a guilty conscience. Self-control restricts the indulgence of our foolish desires, and we find the liberty to love and live as we were meant to.

Paul teaches.

Galatians 5

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,.....23 Meekness, temperance

so, "longsuffering" and "temperance", would be related to self Control.

Patience is also involved.

What ive noticed about the Devil, is that when the believer is tired, then the attack will come..

Or, this will happen...... you'll get a "pile up" or a "pile on".. .where "out of the blue'" several hurtful or harmful situation will "come at once".....and if you are tired, then that is really going to test your "self control".

I think there are two different kinds of self control , one that is a fruit of the Spirit and it often takes time to develop in some areas of our lives. The other is a ‘ self ‘ control in which we don’t want to give up control of certain things. …….. I doubt there is anyone that comes to faith and Instantly has it right !!

Absolutely not, as I said I was a nut job even years after becoming Born Again.......God has brought me to understand what a nut job I was, as I was brought up in a family of “ nut jobs”...how can anyone find there way out of that ignorance without the Lord......Very insightful post there,Rita, ...made me think.

I hope I don’t sound condescending.....I’m just being honest, it was an insightful post.

Proverbs 16:32

New International Version

32 Better a patient person than a warrior,
one with self-control than one who takes a city
The verse is saying the importance of self-control and patience over physical strength and military conquest. It suggests that a person who can govern their emotions and actions is more valuable than someone who can defeat others in battle.

Not saying that one who is a warrior, who takes a city has no self-control either. Not a riddle, it means control must come from within a person's heart, demonstrating confidence, discipline, patience, persistence and real purpose to get the objective completed; and ONLY that objective, without spraying over with other feelings and emotions wild actions, as in an unnecessary spat or argument. Say your peace in care and love, with assertiveness, and move on or be silent.

Self control is a fruit of the Spirit...

My self control comes from the Living Holy Spirit who indwells my spirit, there is no self control in self.

We are partakers of the divine nature...the Living Holy Spirit brings my heart/ spirit into the will of God, I have a Living Faith which is very much Alive and Active in me, I’m Alive in the Spirit...very much so.

2 Timothy 1:7says, “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” With the Holy Spirit inside of us, we are able to possess self-control and demonstrate the fruits of the Spirit. As a result, we can live in a way that is honorable to God

I see two kinds of self control. One is exercised by the natural man, regulating his own behavior and thoughts, imperfectly. The other is a result of walking in the Spirit, as we are supernaturally empowered to do what is right instead of what is wrong.

Much love!

So self-control is but one fruit we exhibit and show progress with, in our lives, because of the influence from the Spirit of God, indeed.

And we know we are showing some improvement in exhibiting this fruit of self-control as we have become more cautious and slower to react to things that used to cause unnecessary volatility, and added and unwanted pressures in our lives, and for others around us. This is the sign that the positive influence of the Spirit in definitely present within our lives.

Our personal character - our values, and our determination to hold to them - can improve. We can improve in how consistently we walk in the Spirit.

Is there a "less then all the way" walking in the Spirit? Or do we know we are walking in the Spirit because we are in fact self-controlled - fully?

Certainly we cannot say we are walking in the Spirit if we are sinning, can we?

Doesn't walking in the Spirit transcend the flesh, and transcend our own imperfect abilities?

Much love!

The Holy Spirit indwells our spirit.

We have been Born Again of imperishable seed that liveth and abideth forever.

“ WE” don’t do anything it’s “ HE” within us, who gives us the power to walk as he once walked.

Never exhibit any power in self, there is NONE!

Never ever take glory unto oneself, all Glory belongs to God!

Alive with Christ
(Colossians 2:6–23)
1And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2in which you used to walk when you conformed to the ways of this world and of the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit who is now at work in the sons of disobedience. 3All of us also lived among them at one time, fulfilling the cravings of our flesh and indulging its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature children of wrath.
4But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in our trespasses. It is by grace you have been saved! 6And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7in order that in the coming ages He might display the surpassing riches of His grace, demonstrated by His kindness to us in Christ Jesus.
8For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9not by works, so that no one can boast. 10For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life.a
One in Christ
(Philippians 2:1–4)
11Therefore remember that formerly you who are Gentiles in the flesh and called uncircumcised by the so-called circumcision (that done in the body by human hands)— 12remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world. 13But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.
14For He Himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has torn down the dividing wall of hostility 15by abolishing in His flesh the law of commandments and decrees. He did this to create in Himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace 16and reconciling both of them to God in one body through the cross, by which He extinguished their hostility.
17He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. 18For through Him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.
Christ Our Cornerstone
(Isaiah 28:14–22; 1 Corinthians 3:10–15; 1 Peter 2:1–8)
19Therefore you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of God’s household, 20built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the cornerstone. 21In Him the whole building is fitted together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord.22And in Him you too are being built together into a dwelling place for God in His Spirit.

You say we don't do anything RitaJ, I think not! We do a great deal in fact as we cannot help it, because we have this Spirit. And are you then being empowered and actually 'walking' and not sitting on the side lines awaiting for a signal for you to walk and engage in the power of the Spirit, say in this case self-control? We must show these fruits of the Spirit, as the Spirit does not force us or cause it all to happen for us RJ. We must live this holy life, and not just in thoughts of the mind, as a mental exercise.

I agree to disagree.

Your post with respect is very confusing.

I stand on my post above.

Because we have this Spirit isn’t biblical therefore confusing.

We are Born Of The Spirit.

What inside you has been Born Again?

“WE” are led by the Spirit.

Your post is all about “ we” there is no we, it’s Him in us, I think that is what you aren’t understanding.

Acts 17:28

King James Version

28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

Berean Standard Bible Par ▾
Testing the Spirits
1Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God. For many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2By this you will know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3and every spirit that does not confess Jesusa is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and which is already in the world at this time.
4You, little children, are from God and have overcome them, because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. 5They are of the world. That is why they speak from the world’s perspective, and the world listens to them. 6We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. That is how we know the Spiritb of truth and the spirit of deception.
Love Comes from God
7Beloved, let us love one another, because love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.
9This is how God’s love was revealed among us: God sent His one and onlyc Son into the world, so that we might live through Him. 10And love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as the atoning sacrificedfor our sins.
11Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God remains in us, and His love is perfected in us. 13By this we know that we remain in Him, and He in us: He has given us of His Spirit. 14And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent His Son to be the Savior of the world.
15If anyone confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 16And we have come to know and believe the love that God has for us. God is love; whoever abides in love abides in God, and God in him. 17In this way, love has been perfected among us, so that we may have confidence on the day of judgment; for in this world we are just like Him.
18There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear involves punishment. The one who fears has not been perfected in love. 19We loveebecause He first loved us.
20If anyone says, “I love God,” but hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. 21And we have this commandment from Him: Whoever loves God must love his brother as well.
