1 John 3:14-18 KJV

Murderers don't have eternal life, and the one who hates their brother is a murderer.

So what does it say about the one who hates their brother? They don't have eternal life, right?

Do you go on to think then that there is someone who has eternal life, then comes to hate their brother, and loses that eternal life? How is it that they would have eternal life, and then go on to hate their brother, if no one who hates their brother has eternal life?

Wouldn't the fact of their hatred mean that they don't actually have eternal life?

Also.... John does not speak in guarantees. 1 John 1:7 says..... IF we walk in the light as He is in the light we have fellowship with one another and the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin.

So you have to walk in the light for the blood of Jesus to cleanse you from all sin. It's a condition because the word IF is in the verse. Walking in the light is loving your brother by the use of indirect wording in 1 John 2:9-11. So IF we love our brother... the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin. No guarantees here. John does not say... we will walk in the light. He says IF we walk in the light. It's a choice. If we confess our sins... he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins. So no confessing of your sin and your not forgiven. Care to test the waters on that verse? You have to make choices in life and you are not a robot. You have the choice to decide to confess or not. You have the choice to walk in the light or not. Both hinge on salvation.

How do you not apply verses like Matthew 5:28-30?
Jesus warns against those who look upon a woman in lust will lead to being cast bodily into hellfire?

What about Matthew 13:41-42?
It says the Son of Man (Jesus) will send forth His angels and they will gather out of HIS KINGDOM all things that offend (sins) and all who work iniquity and they will be cast into the furnace of fire (i.e. the Lake of Fire).
All these passages you've posted, just look at them for what they say, and what they don't say. It's so easy to let ideas sneak in that aren't there.

Hebrews has a couple of passages used frequently by those who think as you do, that give a great demonstration.

Some point to, "if we hold . . . unto the end", as if this determines whether we "remain" partakers. So they read the verse as if, we become partakers of Christ, but if we stop holding our confidence, we will stop being partakers.

But the verse itself actually shows a condition that will exist if we have become partakers. How do we know we have become partakers of Christ, and not just on some "feel good mind trip"? Because it lasts. That's the true teaching of the passage. And there are many places like this.

I actually became much more convinced of OSAS having spent years researching every single passage I could find that anyone used to argue otherwise. But not a single one of them actually support that view.

And they cannot, because the efficacy of Jesus' death is full, compete, when He said, "It is finished", it really was finished.

Does this passage teach that the born again die again? That sin will eternally separate from God those whom are reconciled to Him? Having "received the reconciliation"?

This passage, when you look to the context, teaches us that these behaviors are for those who do not know God, so don't be like them, because you do.

And it does not negate such passages as, "you shall appear with Him in glory", as if that won't happen.

There is a parallel passage,

9) Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,

He owns you now, so do what is right, and not what is wrong. But there is nothing here that says the forgiven will be condemned, or the born again will die again, or that even this sin separated the reconciled and redeemed from Him Who declares them justified.

31) What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?
32) He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
33) Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth.
34) Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

Okay. Why would Paul say this to the Corinthians in 1 Corinthians 6? It's because of 1 Corinthians 5. A believer was fornicating in the church and Paul was telling them to kick this guy out. Paul says that believers are not to have company with any brother who is a fornicator. So Paul is telling them that they will not inherit the kingdom of God if they do such sins.

Paul says BE NOT DECEIVED on the matter of how the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God.
He that does righteousness is righteous (1 John 3:7).
He that sins is of the devil (1 John 3:8).
BE NOT DECEIVED .... that is what Paul says. I doubt he was referring to the Corinthians in being deceived about Universal Salvationism. There is no indication of such a conversation where the Corinthians thought everyone would be saved. That's just pure imaginary to see that in the context. Paul is referring to believers in 1 Corinthians 6:9-11.

You are really not addressing the problem in Matthew 13:41-42, though.
What about Matthew 5:28-30?

This is totally illogical. Why would John bother to mention something that does not apply to believers but to unbelievers? He is talking to believers and warning them not to hate their brother. For he is writing to believers. It would be dumb to say that unbelievers hate their spiritual brothers because they don't have any spiritual brothers.
He's writing the way all the apostles wrote, not presuming that the reader is born again, or not, and not presuming that people never think they are right with God when they actually are not. These are ways you can know, and if you read the passages carefully, without one mindset or the other, you will see this.

Like Colossians 3, If you were raised with Christ . . . this is the condition, and if that condition exists, then the outcome is assured, you shall appear with Him in glory.

And in 1 Corinthians 6, Such people will not inherit, and you used to be one of those, but now you are not, so don't act that way.

First, You are coming from a false premise that God only requires belief only from those on their death beds to be saved.

These scenarios you are giving are mans reasoning to get around Gods ordered/ arranged gospel plan of salvation.

I'm not going along with a false premise.

Forget about the deathbed argument that is always used to get around what Jesus said in His gospel.

Let's look at anyone, who needs to be saved. They all ,no matter their situation must meet Gods requirements in order for Him to save them.

They are,
A Heart (Mind) that desires to know God.Faith
A Heart that is willing to give their life over to God. Obedience/work

Without both You cannot be accepted by God.

To say I truly desire to know God( True Biblical Faith).

Yet not have a mind that does not also desire to submit my will to the God I am seeking to know.

Is a person who does not meet Gods conditions to be saved.

Someone who claims they have faith only. And that faith will save them.
Does not know God.
The Bible teaches those who have no desire to obey God just believe only.
Do not know Him!

God expects everyone to meet the same requirements to be saved.

This does not change Gods ordained plan on how He has chosen to save mankind.

So, anyone who is on their deathbed must meet the same requirements as anyone one else.

They must have more in their heart than just belief.
They must desire to obey all that God has commanded them.
I would teach every person Jesus' gospel. All of it.
Whether they are unable to physically be baptized or not.
God requires obedience from everyone who is accountable to the gospel.

If a person physically is hindered from being baptized.
If that person could be baptized they better have the HEART to want to be baptized.
If they think that not obeying God just believing in Christ, is enough.
They have created a gospel that Jesus and His apostles never taught.

Faith alone and no desire to obey cannot save anyone.
Faith alone and no desire to obey God on your deathbed cannot save.

It is the same gospel for everyone that is accountable to it. Regardless of circumstances.

Your example of being hired on the job does not represent the true gospel.
That example is once again based off of the false premise that you do nothing initially to be saved ie no obedience.

God does not "hire" anyone who does not first obey His gospel.
There is nothing to obey, In your job hiring story.

In reality there are requirements to getting hired.
One example of obedience to get hired is,
You must submit to drug testing and to be hired, obey the company's rules on the use of illegal substances.

So telling believers to “don't act that way”... means... salvation is conditional.

The Parable of the Prodigal Son disproves OSAS.

In the Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32): Was the prodigal son saved while he was living it up with prostitutes? No. How do we know? Well, when the prodigal son came home to his father, his father said he was “dead” and “alive AGAIN” two times within the parable. His father also said that he was “lost” and now he is “found”, too. Generally when we speak of the lost in the Bible, it is referring to those who are not saved. So the prodigal son was dead spiritually while he was living it up with prostitutes, and he became alive AGAIN spiritually when he came back home to his father and sought forgiveness with him. This same truth is expressed in James 5:19-20, as well.

But you say a person can still steal and be saved, though. So there is no real motivation to stop. One can do evil and be in God's kingdom. Yet, 1 John 3:15 says that to hate your brother is to have no eternal life abiding in you.
He that does not provide for his own is worse than infidel (unbeliever) (1 Timothy 5:8). Why would Jesus warn us to not look upon a woman in lust? He says that by doing so... one's whole body will be cast into hellfire. Jesus does not say there is a free pass for believers doing this or that believers are not capable of doing such. In fact.... it would be pointless to tell unbelievers about this because they cannot be saved without first accepting Jesus as their Savior.

I don't refuse to see anything. I've spent years studying this very thing . . . for a reason . . . and that reason is not to be blind. It's to know the truth, because it's truth that sets us free. And this truth is very liberating. In fact, it's what gives us that freedom to not walk in sin.

That's what drives the flesh into the frenzy of sin. It actually works against you.

Again, if there is no penalty... nobody is going to really obey. For if there was no penalty to breaking the speed limit on the highway any more then more people will start to speed and drive like maniacs. Others will obey it simply because of safety reasons and they don't want to get in an accident. Again,... they obey out of the consequences of what could happen that is bad.

You are still not dealing with Matthew 5:28-30.
Oh, and no. If there was no penalty to sin... that would not make a person to not sin.
The exact opposite will happen. People will justify whatever sin they like on some level if there is no penalty for sin.
To say so otherwise is confusion.

The speed limit or lack thereof doesn't determine what sort of a person I am, whether I am careful or not. But those who aren't careful will be revealed. Then again, they are revealed anyway as I watch them drive.

Again,... they obey out of the consequences of what could happen that is bad.

I drive safely because it is good for all of us.

We live righteously because it is good for us to do so, not because we will be condemned to hell if we don't. That's what salvation is about. We are saved from sin.

On the other thread our friend even seemed to imply that a believer getting a Bible verse tattoo risks losing his - or often her - salvation.

Now I see where our friend is coming from doctrinally.

Romans 8.38-39 is powerfully assuring to the true believer; as is John's First Epistle.

You just proved my point. Because there are CONSEQUENCES to your wrong action.
This is the same with the Bible's teaching on Conditional Salvation. If you sin, and you don't confess and forsake that sin... spiritual death will be upon you.

OK, what specifically are you asking me?

Is this passage teaching that those who were baptized into Jesus Christ's death, who have been recreated in God's pattern, God's spirit children, that God may cast them into hell? Is that what you are asking me?
