I gotta say, FB, this is a little surprising, if not disappointing. I once read from research by the (reputable) Barna Group that benevolent altruism and/or consecration rates were similar among nearly all people groups, small, large, religious, or otherwise. In other words, human nature is the same everywhere. It sounds a lot like you're blaming large denominations for true legalism, which is extremely rare anywhere. Small, non-denominal churches do not have a monopoly on the fruit of the Spirit. The Spirit is drawing people right now who've never even heard the name "Jesus." And I'm not saying all religions and philosophies are correct or headed toward the same goal.If you start hanging around real Christians in small non-denominational churches you will not be subjected to the legalism of the unsaved in the major denominations. Try it. You'll find humble, level-headed, Spirit filled people there to fellowship with. Not perfect people. But real people of God who know the falseness of, both, legalism and Hyper Grace theology.
Nearly all of what people like to call "legalism' is actually just people trying to justify their own actions to themselves and other people. Let's face it: They're not fooling God. People who are extremely scrupulous to the detriment of others generally don't have any kind of devotional life or personal relationship with Jesus. It's usually quite evident. And it's the essence of self-righteousness. :) We're still pals, right? ;)
