How do you know you have avoided the flu and cold by washing your hands? Just saying...
I lived alone for 6 years. A few times there were more than a year between the last time someone was in my apartment and the next time. I always washed my hands when I came in and during those times, I never got a cold or flu. It seemed obvious to me.

Washing hands is another overrated thing that people place too much emphasis on:

"And when the Pharisee saw it, he marvelled that he had not first washed before dinner. And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness." (Luke 11:38-39)

@Truman the Levite ...Well besides after going to the bathroom or getting up and washing my face and hands and sometimes before a meal I do not go out of way to disinfect or wash my hands. I have not had the flu as I know it for about 40 odd years. And then when I did, it was from a mandatory vaccine given in the military. That's my story.

What germs can you get from not washing your hands?

Common respiratory illnesses caused by poor hand hygiene include the common cold, influenza, chicken pox and meningitis. We often hear of infections being transmitted in hospitals and this is often the result of staff and patients not washing their hands.

Just like anything else handwashing has a history....people had to die to prove the point.

No not all....actually I'm really serious about the washing of hands.... it seems that society has impressed this 'cleaning' act upon us even more today, even before 2020. It is overkill....

I recall on the many cruises my wife and I took....lots of places on board had a washing feature/function....wetted disinfectant towel dispensers, even a washing basin before you when into to eat food. It ready kicked in after 2016. Now I can understand that placing folks like sardines in a floating can can be a little hazardous to your heath...and many folks come down from the NE and embark the ship already sounding hoarse with snotty noses.....we used common sense and avoided them as best we could....

Washing hands a new thing?....Of course you know about the Jewish customs, even before they knew anything about germs and bacteria. What is new, is a lack of personal hygiene...take a walk in Walmart.

Back in the day people cleaned their homes with bleach and ammonia. The intent was to kill germs and bacteria... Mopping the floors with various germ killing agents. Now a days don't mop, just use a swiffer duster. You have a dirty room that stinks, don't clean it, Febreze it...make the germs smell good! When you clean do not kill the germs and bacteria...polish them....just make it look clean.

For one Staph infections are on the rise because of this.

I guess when you get over 70 you might want to be a bit more careful when playing in the dirt...
Yes, the problem may not be getting germs but being able to stand back up from playing in the dirt !!!!!! (speaking as a 63year old that has problems getting up now when she is cleaning on her knees at work , good job they have handrails ) lol

Did I say or suggest washing hands was a new thing? And now we are going to Jew-ish customs, and to the cleaning the inside of homes to keep germs at bay. Where are you going with all this, to create a new extended discussion about germs and bacteria in general, in life? And how we must always be mindful and alert everyday to germs that are lurking about that we cannot see. I think common sense cleaning and cleanliness should suffice without too much fuss, that used to be a quiet uneventful and common chore in life, as cooking and eating.

Come to think of it..
the only time I wash my hands is when I do the dishes.
And I live alone and don't eat much, so that's not very often.
And I haven't been sick for a long long time.
I live with 8 cats. My house isn't the cleanest.
Actually it's not my house and I've been told not to move things around much or throw stuff away.
Except the usual common house trash.
This was and to some extent still is a hoarders residence.
I don't know if you've ever watched the series called "Hoarders" if you have than you have an idea of my living conditions.
Over the last 5 years I've made some progress, but it took a lot of convincing that old plastic containers and empty cereal boxes
were not really the best for anything "creative" .
It took me awhile to make a path to the bathroom, let alone the sink or shower.
I got no help from anyone. It was live in it as it is.
I can't move around very good, lifting stuff is difficult. But I think I've done a fair job. And somewhat presentable should anyone ever happen to stop by and visit.
My dad comes and stays with me randomly a weekend here or a week there. He is used to living in a hoarders home.
His girlfriend is a "proffesional crafter" and doesn't like to throw away ANYTHING. And I mean, ANYTHING.
Prior to living here, I spent 10 years living in a sleeper cab of a Freightliner. Always bound by the clock.
Have to keep those wheels rolling. The rules of the road was, you had to take a certain amount of time off each week. I think it was 34 hours.
That time was used for laundry, showers, and refilling the cabinets with non perishable foods you could eat while moving.
The driver (my ex) didn't like to sit still. And when the clock said we could go, off we went. Sometimes 18-20 hours a day.
Even though the law required you to sleep for 8, most of that time was used for looking for the next load and maybe grabbing a bite to eat.

You would think with all those germs and greese and dirt and oil and restrooms (mostly rest areas) I would have been on my death bed.
We only got sick once that I can recall from what I believe was food poisoning at a T/A truckstop. We both had the chicken fried steak and ended up in the restroom sharing the sink and the toilet. That was a bad night LOL.

I'm just saying..
a little dirt never killed anyone, unless your alergic to certain germs, cobwebs, mice droppings, cat hair, fleas.....
Speaking of which,
I'm beginning my Fall cleaning tomorrow which will probably take me to Spring to finish.
So my hands should be fairly clean for most the winter. Depending on how much more trash I'm allowed to remove from the premises.
The more I remove, the better I can clean.
I always use Dial soap even though I read somewhere that using anti-bacterial soaps are not recommended for removing bacteria.

You know the world has gone insane right???
LOL
Hugs

When it comes to germs, bacteria, or viruses they are not good cohabitators. You took the conversion to the silly side with your statements.
Washing hands in excess can be a detriment to good health.
How do you know you have avoided the flu and cold by washing your hands?
A filthy person, a filthy house, there is no health advantages to that.
Dirty hands, filthy body, dirty house....it all ends up in you, by way of your hands to mouth or breathing in the filth.
There are a lot people that think they way though. I smell them all the time.

When we would entered Moslem towns, we all would jump out of the humvees with machine guns and take station...but not all of us had guns. Some of the medics had electronic devises to measure the amount of feces that was floating around in the air. You do not want to live like that. The concept is general cleanliness, which starts with washing your hands. Of course washing your hands reduces the amount of germs you feed yourself. Remember when mom and dad use to tell you to wash your hands after you go to the bathroom...there was a reason for that.

Not to be nit-picking here but I think you are not reading my post clearly, and then maybe you are letting a little emotional cloud hover over you and skew what I really wrote on this subject. Just to refresh your memory again.

For example, I said "Washing hands in excess can be a detriment to good health, depending (the qualifier) of the chemicals used in washing your hands." Read the entire sentence...

And your second blue lettered statement of mine should be easy to understand. right? It was not meant to be cute at all. You really do not understand it do you? Well that does amaze me a bit. Do you really want me to explain it to you?

No worries, this subject as you said before, in my words, has been around for a very long time anyway.

Did I not copy them into the post?

depending on the qualifier? What would that be?...something outside the topic? What do people normally wash their hands with? Is it a mystery? The topic is simply with all that is running around it is a good idea to wash your hands. You took exception to Heart2Soul when she said...
Wash your hands is the number one most effective way to prevent the spread of disease.
If you think about it you have to put your mask on with your hands. If your hands are contaminated then you just transferred the contaminant to your mask and that puts it right where it wants to be...near your nose or mouth.

Explain it to me? Please do. You keep putting your foot in your mouth. You probably do not wash them either...you do not want to wash to much....humor....Look you are wrong. I forgive ya....not mad at you....shut up and go wash your hands.

I should say you and Cristo Rei.

Grailhunter! I added the parenthesized qualifier for emphasis. It was not in my original statement. If you would be in my sight I would ask you whether you are deliberately taunting me with my words or you really do not understand what I am saying. This conversation should not be happening.

Let's just quit now, as it NOW getting silly and out of hand. We are talking over each other....

And I do not do masks GH, and I really took exception with H2S comment, YES indeed...in a debatable fashion...not in any other way...

Hey, I do like you lots and don't forget it. I'm just missing the plot here with you, if you can forgive me for that..thanks

Washing hands is another overrated thing that people place too much emphasis on:
I cannot believe I am seeing all these posts about hand-washing, and the snide remarks within them! Common sense dictates that we wash our hands whenever necessary. Which has nothing to do with the ceremonial washing of hands etc.
