So who has been to New Jersey?

Some ppl think of NJ as an extension of NYC - after all, Liberty Island with the Statue of Liberty is within waters of the State of New Jersey because it's far nearer the Jersey shore than Manhattan.

But New Jersey also has (some of) the Pocono Mountains and the Delaware Water Gap.

My husband was born in New Jersey, but I've never been there. He showed me pics. Parts of NJ are beautiful.

For me New Jersey was another one of my stopping places with the US Army. After completing my basic training in California I was sent to Fort Monmouth, NJ for my 35 weeks of for microwave radio repair school. While I was there, President Kennedy was assassinated.

We were located only about 50 miles from New York City so that was often our destination for the weekends . But... we also made our way periodically to the beach on the New Jersey Atlantic coast.

Oh yes, while it was a very long time ago, I enjoyed my time there. The trees in the fall were in multitude of beautiful colors. That winter was the first full one I spent anywhere with snow on the ground. Where I lived in California snow at any time was extremely unusual and it had never snowed enough to make the ground white.

The duty contrast is one of my clearest memories. Compared to basic training they took it very easy on us on purpose to allow us to absorb the classroom training.

NJ is both North and South: Cape May can get rather hot...but also MJ can have a lot of snow...

I arrived there in about October and stayed until sometime in late Spring so the saw little if any of summer. I remember taking leave for Christmas when they closed the school for a while. I arrived in California with a severe case of measles. My mother drove me to Fort Ord where they admitted me to a quarantined building in their hospital. It was apparently a small epidemic as the building was full of measles cases. Half of my leave was spent in that hospital.

@Prayer Warrior: Well I guess you still have your first visit to make to NJ! :)
No, my husband died a few years ago, and I don't travel much. I'm just wanting to get to the Smokey Mountains! My family vacationed there a lot, but I haven't been able to get there. A prayer request, maybe?

I know you're one of them dang yankees! LOL

Sounds like maybe you've been to as many states as I have. :) I've been as far north as Indianapolis, as far south as St. Pete, FL., as far west as Colorado and as far east as the North and South Carolina Atlantic coasts. So, just about every state in between those.

My husband and I always wanted to visit Prince Edward Island after seeing "Anne of Green Gables." But we never made it up there. It looks so beautiful.

I think they say Yankees for New Englanders rather than Canadians! :)

PEI would be interesting, yes; I've never been, although my wife knows the Canadian Maritimes a little.

Yeah, I'm joking, but I have no doubt that some southerners think of everyone north of the Mason-Dixon line as a yankee! :)

So, you've never been to the Bay of Fundy?

Nope; but I understand that there are some of the highest tides of the world there...

So what did your dh tell you about New Jersey? :)

Yes, the tides are high and rise extremely fast! It would be a little scary to see it.

He mostly talked about his family, which was very dysfunctional. Whose isn't, right? There was a "mountain" behind his house, and he used to run away to it to get away from his brother who he said was always trying to kill him. They moved down to St. Petersburg, Florida when my husband was in high school. His dad had his own dairy business, and his lungs couldn't take delivering dairy products in the cold NJ air, so they all moved south.

Yes, well, it does get cold in the mountains of Northern New Jersey. The highest point of NJ is called...High Point, near the NY Catskill Mountains and the Pennsylvania Poconos.

I'm not surprised he found Florida much warmer... :)
