commentator has suggested that Iran might feel compelled to accelerate its nuclear ambitions to create a bomb as a deterrent against Israel, following intensified Israeli military actions.

Recent weeks have seen Israel expand its offensive, striking hard at Hezbollah in Lebanon, an important Iranian ally and a group labelled a terrorist organization by the UK, US, and other Western countries.


As Israeli strikes persist in Lebanon, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is determined to diminish the threat from the Shia militants.

Hezbollah has traditionally been seen by Iran as a safeguard against any Israeli assault on its nuclear facilities. Should Israel launch an attack, Hezbollah would be expected to respond with its substantial cache of 150,000 rockets supplied by Iran.

Yet, with Hezbollah's leadership nearly obliterated, including its top figure Hassan Nasrallah, Iran might judge that it can no longer count on its partner for deterrence.
