It’s a fact that in some societies, male dominance is a right and the treatment of women is archaic by today’s standards…but accepted as the norm. Women have no rights or say in much of anything, and that’s the way men like it in those cultures. But what is the Christian view?

Going back to the garden of Eden, it is interesting to note that in passing sentence on the first rebels, God said to the woman…”

All the faithful women of old were an asset to their families and not treated as chattels. But they respected their husband’s headship……which was not to be exercised as dictatorship. A man was to value his wife as something precious to him, and a wife was to be industrious, not just a housebound servant.

Proverbs 31:10-31 outline some of the things that a “capable wife” was able to do in a Jewish household. A man was indeed blessed to have a capable wife.

Jesus cherished his female disciples and treated them with respect and honored them in ways that may have seemed foreign in Jewish society.
So the “macho man” dominating his wife and forcing submission, is a human invention. It was never God’s intention for the man to dominate his wife as it came to be viewed in Bible times, and in some cultures even today.

Being a God of order, Jehovah puts the man in the drivers seat, and there is only one set of controls, not two. Christians have to know what is expected of them in the roles that God assigned to them….the gender roles today are completely out of place and a cause for disunity and it’s resulting problems….battles of will in so many areas, end in unresolved conflicts and sometimes, bitter divorce. But women who have Christ as their instructor will know their place within the family unit. Men likewise will appreciate the role that they have, and try their best to accommodate the wishes of their wives and family when making decisions, whilst at the same time understanding that his role is not one of power, but of responsibility for all in the family. Maturely talking through the issues together and finding workable solutions is what keeps the peace so sadly lacking in todays relationships.

God showed great mercy upon the first pair!

- The forsaking of their own fig leaf covering - exposing their shame! learning repentance etc
- The learning of sacrifice and the covering of their sin (in type) Leviticus 17 with a skin of an animal "shedding of blood!"
- The teaching of how God deals with sin and A&E teaching of this to their children
- The worship before the Lord by the whole family! (Cain & Abel)
- The Blessing of a son in Seth, Eve's understanding and Gods purpose - she names him "appointed"
- The naming of Eve (purpose) - God blesses Eve and she acknowledges it as a blessing Gen 4:25-26

All of this and more reveals God work with the first pair in dealing with sin!

By this Divine law in Genesis 3, wives are required to be in subjection to their husbands, whilst husbands are required to manifest toward their wives the same self-sacrificing love that Christ reveals towards the church (Eph. 5:22-27). The law does not make provision for dictatorial domination, but, on the part of the husband, a manifestation of the qualities of God (1 Cor 11:7) and on the part of the wife that loving and church should exhibit towards Christ. There is nothing difficult in this when the attitude of each towards the other is motivated by mutual affection and understanding, and is dominated by the self-effacing love that Christ reveals towards his "Bride".

As shown Proverbs 31:28-41: "Her children arise up, and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praiseth her: Many daughters have done virtuously, But thou excellest them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: But a woman that feareth Yahweh, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; And let her own works praise her in the gates"

Adam & Eve would have received further instruction from the Lord as to those principles of being a husband and wife. Their tilling the ground (pysically & spiritually) whould have taught them a great deal about bearing fruits for God though the ground would be unbearable for them to bring forth its fruits. Eve would learn to become a helper rather than grasping for that which is not hers.

What is interesting about the Genesis record is how Eve was a helper to Adam.

The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a companion (ezer, helper) for him who corresponds to him.”

Post sin, this relationship would be lost as the consequence of sin, but not without a future hope of restoration!

"And thy desire shall be to thy husband"

"Desire" in Hebrew is teshuwqah and denotes "a stretching out after", "a longing for". It is from the root shuwq, "to rush after or over", i.e. to over flow as water.

"desire"? The comment in Genesis is that it is "to" her husband, rather than "for" her husband, and this suggests that the "desire" is for a restoration to her former status with her husband before sin entered the world.

She had then enjoyed a unity with Adam as his helper, but that position had been harmed. Her restoration depended upon her attitude and actions in conformity to the marriage covenant, and the divine commandments.

Thankfully after the Covenant made in Genesis 3:15 they would look forward to the time when spiritually, this state of equality between man and woman is restored in Christ (Gal. 3:28), for both have equal privileges and status in him.

When the relationship is out of balance, whether a toxic male, or a contentious wife, the outcome can be disasterous.
