The Pope was in the news again, chastising the U.S. for the deportations underway. The charge is that immigrants who snuck in, did so to have a better life, etc. The premise is that apparently the U.S. is the only country where they can have a good life, or maybe it’s that they are owed the best life they can find in the world.

Ann Beth Stuckey calls this distortion of Christian charity Toxic Empathy.

Coincidentally, it has turned that FEMA sent $59M to NYC so their illegal aliens can be housed in luxury hotels: apparently any charity one provides must be the very best or one is insensitive.

Blessings.

Why not go straight to the heart of the matter Bob and ask immigrants, legal or otherwise, why they leave their countries for the US?

I think that is what Joe Biden asked Kamala Harris to do early in his presidency. I don't think she got around to it.

My grandmother married a Hispanic, so I came from a bicultural family. My grandfather has passed now.

They make a lot of money and send it back to their families because the US dollar is worth a lot more there.

My grandfather became a legal citizen obviously, but he didn't like other people crossing the border and made a big deal about it.

Could it be that many illegals cross borders because of desperation?

If your house is burning and you went onto your neighbours property to ask for help, would it be appropriate for the neighbour to charge you with trespassing?

Yeah, that's why they need the money.

Poverty is a problem. However, child, sex, and drug trafficking is a bigger problem. It's not only innocent people crossing the border. It's criminals.

I'm sorry, but America is safer with the border being protected.

Child sex trafficking is endemic in all cultures...even that of the US ofA. To use the charge of child rapists to demonise desperate families/ people is pointing the finger oblivious that ones other fingers are pointing back.

Poverty to a large extent is the result of oppression. Considering how they leave their own countries....on foot, with families and the few possessions they have in tow, gives any compassionate attitude a leg up.

It's not that I don't care.

It is that if I open my door to save all of the feral cats, I'm going to have a rat problem. So do I leave my door open because I love animals and it's cold this winter, and I feel really bad?

No, I don't. Not because I "don't care" about all of the cats. It's because I don't want mice in my house and I have a responsibility to protect my children from whatever issues mice have.

I think we're going way off into another world of blaming the wrong group and asking the question "Why can't people break the law in order to be taken care of?"

Instead, maybe the question should be, "What should be done by their own leaders, so that they're not risking their lives and the lives of their children?"

Do we not see the bigger picture here?

Thank you for responding.

If my house were burning, and my neighbor welcomed me, I would be grateful for assistance. But if I said to my neighbor, thanks but I am going to drive to a richer neighborhood, that would be insensitive and arrogant.

We do not have, nor should we have, an unlimited immigration policy for the world. Those needing asylum are welcome to apply, but we do not have an unlimited asylum policy, either.

Peace.

It's also worth noting, @quietthinker, I would say watch one documentary to learn about what happens to people who are crossing the borders.

People die. Men, women, and children die trying to cross.

If anything, for their sake, this should not be their only option. The solution needs to come from within their own country.

I went to Mexico as a kid and coming back over the border, kids were chasing the cars asking for money. It's a sad thing.
