"Speak evil of no man."

"Do all things without murmurings and disputings" (Phillipians 2:14 KJV)

Titus 3:1-2 KJV

3 Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,
2 To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.

Has anyone else felt drawn to these verses or tried to apply them?

It's good to read the whole chapter. It lays out good parameters for God's people to walk within, maintaining good works and godly conduct so that we do not bring "bad light" to the name of Christ.

Here is a passage of scriptures that correspond to this.

Matthew 5:9-16

[9]Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
[10]Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
[11]Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
[12]Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
[13]Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
[14]Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
[15]Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

[16]Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

To speak "evil" of no man, and to speak truth of someone is not the same. Jesus rebuked the high archy of His day, was that speaking evil?
Saul, before becoming Paul, dedicated himself to seeing every Christian die. He was feared among Christians, and they spoke of him, was that speaking evil of him? Paul warned of a man who was having an affair with his own mother and Paul warned the church to not allow him or her influencing them or he would come back and lay hands on him. Was that speaking evil of him? When the bible tells us to remove the wolves among the sheep in the body, and warn everyone who they are and what they're attempting to do, is that speaking evil?

You must balance the word, or the talk, with the walk. Everything that is said, is not always what you think it imply's. That is why the word itself encourages us to Ponder and Meditate and seek revelation from the Holy spirit.

Yes I think Jesus was a man who could get His point across well. When He rebuked the pharisees calling them a brood of vipers, He was telling them to their faces instead of telling others, which is courage.
I think there is a fine line between moaning about what someone has done to you, or "venting" and gossip and speaking ill of someone. I think it comes down to intent, and I am still working out the finer details, but I realise others can use your venting and fears as a way to frame you as a bad mouther, and I have made this mistake before and vented to people only for them to tell others which is a form of back biting in itself. It's so frustrating I have stopped venting to people now at work because it's not worth it. Best off telling your concerns to peoples faces, but it must be done delicately so not to upset them and cause revenge as this has happened before too...

its a wobbly business for sure.

We must learn to buffet our own bodies against temptations and to put in practice what we preach, otherwise, they'll talk about us and say boy he has a good talk, but he walks funny, and if it's true, it won't be evil. It will be true.

One can pull apart any text and do a head job on it but those who understand know exactly what Paul is talking about without going on an over analysing trip.

When see,ING to understand the bible there area few things to remember, context is one, what the Bible says elsewhere about this subject and how have others translated the scripture.
.language meaning and use changes a d with biblegateway it is possible to view multiple translations simultaneously.

To speak evil a.so translated to slander.

As James says the tongue needs to be controlled, temper, feelings, words said to us can all let the tongue loose a d we can say what we shouldn't to so done with us.

Ill be honest. I have trouble with being critical of others. And no, not in a "I spoke the truth in love." kind of way. More like petty faultfinding.

Have prayed about it. Id like to not do this anymore and try to point out the good in others or say nothing instead.

There are so many Scriptures about the wisdom of not saying too much

Sometimes it is great temptation to open our mouths to personally rebuke or to point a person's faults to someone else.

There is a time to be silent and a time to speak as per Solomon in Ecclesiastes 3. Jesus provided for us the perfect example. How difficult is it to always do as Jesus did? Surrendering ourselves to God, of course, is the answer. We need His help even to completely surrender. Alone we can do nothing.

"O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps." Jerem 10:23

So we cannot do it...alone but, but yielding to the Holy Spirit in accord with God's will make anything possible:

"And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible." Mark 10:27

Totally agree Winnie!
My mom often said "if you have nothing good to say about someone then, say nothing"
Thanks for the memory!

Hmmm, do I take it that when you are not giving us the affirmation, 'I'll be honest' that you are not honest?
