1 John 3:1-3 KJV
1) Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
2) Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
3) And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
Every man that has WHAT hope?
The hope - that is, what we expect to happen because of what we believe - for instance, we believe Jesus when He promised us resurrection, so we have the hope of the resurrection. We believe Him, He promised resurrection, so we expect to be raised from the dead.
In this case, this hope, this is knowing that when He appears, when we see Him, that we will be like Him, for we will see Him as He is.
We who are the children of God can KNOW as a certainty that we WILL see Him, and seeing Him, we WILL become like Him.
And it's knowing this fact,
Every man who has this hope purifies Himself.
An ongoing objection to doctrines remeniscent of "OSAS" is that if you believe you are safe in God's salvation, that it can never go away, then you won't care about sin.
But the reality is . . . having this hope is what causes you to purify yourself!
The truth is exactly opposite to what so many think. They think that unless you are motivated by the fear of condemnation, you'll be a slacker.
But the reality, it's not me, it's Jesus in me, that's what makes the difference. Knowing that I can't be lost from God, that's what empowers me to live right.
Exactly opposite! But then, isn't God that way? Not at all what so many seem to think!
How He loves us!!
Much love!
