    What is the Bible about?

Who has a vested interest in Job caving and cursing God? And we already see satan speaking through Job's wife in chapter 2 when she urges Job to curse God. Job's friends were unable to convict Job (because he was innocent), and God is about to reveal Himself to Job. After everything that has...

    What is the Bible about?

You claim Job has sinned, right? So if he sinned, where is the sacrifice for his sin? God requires a sacrifice for his friends who had clearly sinned, so what about Job? Where does it say Job had to sacrifice for his "sin"? Hebrews 9:22 "In fact, according to the law of Moses, nearly everything...

    What is the Bible about?

In Job 34:37 Elihu says, "For he addeth rebellion unto his sin, he clappeth his hands among us, and multiplieth his words against God." Can you tell us what "sin" Elihu is referring to that Job is supposedly adding rebellion to?

    What is the Bible about?

Great question. This conclusion is based on the things Elihu says and the context in which he says them. I know he is a beloved character by some who read this story, but there are serious problems with him. Elihu operates essentially as a prosecutor and a persecutor to Job. For starters, look...

Job's friends failed him in his hour of need

Yes, I love that passage, and it's crucial to understand in light of interpreting the OT. I also love when Jesus explicitly states in John 5:39 that the Scriptures testify to Him. When it comes to these characters, i.e., Adam, Noah, even Joseph, etc. I've heard it expressed as a "type and...

Job's friends failed him in his hour of need

This is beautifully explained. Thank you!! I see a lot of people who ridicule Job and fail to see him as a type of Christ Jesus, the suffering servant who was to come. Thank you for laying this out so well. I hope it helps others to see the story this way, too.

    What is the Bible about?

Thanks for this post. While Job's 3 friends failed him, I do still think they are real friends of Job. I don't think he would have engaged with them as much as he did had they not been his friend at all. But, of course, their reasoning was faulty and of no help to Job in this unique...

Why Do You Either Support or Reject Elihu in the Book of Job?

The reason I point this out is because many people in support of Elihu praise him for these words, but they seem to forget or ignore that this idea is not new within this story. It's already been stated by Job. On top of that, Elihu incessantly rails against Job as if every single thing Job has...

Job's friends failed him in his hour of need

Very much agree with this point. Yes, Jesus cries out on the Cross, "My God My God, why have You forsaken Me?" which is effectively the same cry of Job to God all throughout his ordeal. The only thing I would differ with in your assessment is including Elihu with the friends. Job had 3 friends...

Why Do You Either Support or Reject Elihu in the Book of Job?

Did you notice that Job has already mentioned the mediator or "daysman" in 9:33? And then in 19:25 Job proclaims he knows his Redeemer lives and one day He will stand on the earth. Job says these things before Elihu speaks. (By the way, have you ever noticed how many other ideas Elihu recycles...

Job's friends failed him in his hour of need

Neither is there any praise given him by God either, so that logic falls apart quickly. Job, however, is explicitly affirmed by God twice in chapters 1 & 2 and twice in chapter 42. Do not be deceived by Elihu.

Do you see the Gospel at all in the book of Job?

Thanks, I see. So you don't necessarily have a strong opinion of him?

OK sounds good! Also, just curious how you came to your conclusions about Elihu. Can you share? Thanks!

Why Do You Either Support or Reject Elihu in the Book of Job?

Author Victor Hugo (Les Miserables) is quoted as saying “Tomorrow, if all literature were to be destroyed and it was left to me to retain one work only, I would save Job.” Another poet, Lord Tennyson is also quoted as saying “The greatest poem, whether of ancient or modern literature, is the...

Great Men Are Not Always Wise: Neither Do The Aged Understand Judgment.

Doing well, thank you, and thanks for your response! In Job 35:16 Elihu accuses Job of "opening his mouth in vain". Do you agree with this accusation leveled at Job?

What is your overall opinion of Elihu as a character and the role he plays in the story of Job?

Job's friends failed him in his hour of need

Job 35:16 "Therefore doth Job open his mouth in vain; he multiplieth words without knowledge." It's true that Job speaks without knowing his situation fully, but Elihu accuses Job of speaking "in vain". Are you in agreement with Elihu then that Job spoke in vain? Is that your position? Does...

Job's friends failed him in his hour of need

On the same page with you regarding Elihu. What I have found fascinating is that after the whirlwind arrives Elihu is never mentioned or heard from again. Perhaps there is a correlation with the arrival of the whirlwind and Elihu's whereabouts. Have you ever cross referenced the appearance of a...

Job's friends failed him in his hour of need

How do you know God sent Elihu? Also, in Job 34:37 Elihu accuses Job of adding rebellion to his "sin". Can you tell us what this "sin" is exactly?
