We do not need hymnals anymore because we either sing seven words twenty-four times or twenty-four words song seven times.

Usually, the words go something like this: -

"Lord, we want to worship/love you."

And the Lord asks, "When?"

It is my experience that the church changes from decade to decade. With a new generation comes new stuff. I would say that most of the old hymns in hymnals were from earlier church ages.

The two most important figures in the church...

1. The Senior Pastor
2. The Worship Leader

I would say this makes up the two great trumpets... Make thee two trumpets of silver; of a whole piece shalt thou make them: that thou mayest use them for the calling of the assembly, and for the journeying of the camps. - Numbers 10:2

1. The Worship Leader - First trumpet bringing us into a time of worship
2. The Senior Pastor - Second trumpet bringing us into a time in the word

Whatever the material.. .A good worship leader will bring us into an atmosphere of good worship.

But those old hymns have substance. They have correct doctrine and can help even someone not raised in the faith to understand things.

I do personally enjoy the old hymnal. But, like @Matthias , when i do see them, they look like they have been unopened for hundreds of years.

Our aforementioned traditional music director referred to those (with poorly concealed contempt) as "7-11" songs - 7 verses repeated 11 times.

Does your church still use hymnals?

We actually have 2 hymnals. The Methodist Hymnal has few songs more recent than Charles Wesley tunes. and Fanny Crosby is considered daring. (A female composer? What is this world coming to?) The Faith We Sing has some slightly more contemporary worship songs.
There is even a third hymnal for the “blended” or contemporary Methodist churches, “The Celebration Hymnal.” Interestingly, the British Methodists have an almost completely different hymnal. (Note aside: for the traditional church musician, having a collection of hymnals old and new provides one with a wider selection of music for a Communion service.)

We don't use a "hymnal" but we have a (relatively) modern songbook that contains a mixture of old hymns and more modern worship songs. The problem is, it's already out of date, because new songs are continually being written (and some of them are very good). So powerpoint is invaluable. But we're a small church and the tech guy isn't always around, so we still use the books as well.

I have been to a huge non denomination Church and honestly it had the feel of a concert setting like I was at a rock concert I felt uncomfortable. I prefer hymns and a more sacred setting its what I am use to.

Thank you all for your posts.

Does this song resonate with anyone? (“He gives us all His love”)

Blessings.
