Welcome soberxp! This is the world,so what to do?
Authoritative religious institutions defined doctrine as dead and then taught a group of people how to understand because of the wrong things. Do not complain that atheists do not believe, because the wrong things, people instinctively resist, I believe that the spirit of God is living in everyone,if not so we are dead already.
False prophets are among us, they distort the word of God, They're blocking the road of life, and that is the result of the world today.
So what to do?
The prophecies were given of false teachers teaching destructive doctrines, and the believing of a lie causing strong delusion and great apostacy. Beginning with the church fathers, the church has attempted to rid the church of heresies, which continues to this day. Unfortunately, as @Scott Downey pointed out, most looked for heresies in others, and not within their own teachings. And so, yes, here we are in a world where the wrong things, have and still are, indeed the cause of great apostacy just as it was foretold.
Instead of suspecting heresies and errors to be great and even among themselves, the church has believed they have, and continue to stop all heresy at the door, and therefore think they are on the right path--when they are not--because they have not suspected that they too could be under the same false teachings which were already being taught early on within the church. If they would have taken the warnings to heart, the church leaders of these past centuries would have expected to go through the times of heresies and anticipated the need for corrections--which the scriptures also foretold. But they have not, and still insist that no correction is needed except their correction of others. Which means the promise of also being lead unto all truth and the finish of the mystery of God as He declared to His servants the prophets, is instead a rerun not unlike the error of the Priests and Pharisees who rejected Messiah: Their rejection of Christ in the flesh, and our own rejection of Him in the spirit--which He also foretold.
But who has seen it coming?
