This doesn't look good...
"China warns coronavirus can spread before symptoms show

Rising toll: 80 people are dead and more than 2,700 cases have been confirmed in mainland China, as the Wuhan coronavirus continues to spread throughout Asia and the rest of the world.
China on lockdown: Nearly 60 million people have been affected by partial or full lockdowns in Chinese cities as the country's government steps up its response.
Global spread: There are more than 50 confirmed cases in 13 places outside of mainland China, including at least five in the United States.
Contagious before symptoms: People can spread the virus before symptoms show, China's health minister said Sunday, complicating efforts to contain the outbreak."Coronavirus outbreak: Latest news and live updates - CNN

"Stocks tumble amid growing coronavirus fears
Global stock markets sank Monday amid growing fears about the Chinese coronavirus that has killed dozens and spread to more than 10 countries.

The MSCI All-Country World Index tracking stocks in more than 40 countries fell 0.42 to its lowest point in two weeks after the death toll from the virus rose to 81 and three new cases were confirmed in the US this weekend.

“The coronavirus is an economic and financial shock,” Bannockburn Securities chief market strategist Marc Chandler told clients, according to Reuters. “The extent of that shock still needs to be assessed, but it could provide the spark for an arguably long-overdue adjustment in the capital markets.”...https://nypost.com/2020/01/27/stocks-tumble-amid-growing-coronavirus-fears/

Federal Reserve, having already cut rates under Trump's prompting to help recover from the tax cuts, has now cut rates to almost zero.

What does that mean? It means we've already eaten the seed corn. Now the Fed can't do anything more, if the economy goes further south.

Blooper Reel...

His people had to come on afterward and clean up some of the bigger goofs and misstatements. "He got almost everything wrong."

Amazing coincidence; travel bans waived for nations just happen to be for those nations where Trump owns golf courses, even though they have more coronavirus cases than some other nations from which he did ban travel.

I don't think you can do this in the US, much like when a hurricane comes...
"Coronavirus: Spain and France announce sweeping restrictions
Two of the EU's biggest states, Spain and France, have followed Italy in announcing emergency restrictions to combat the spread of the coronavirus.

In Spain, people are banned from leaving home except for buying essential supplies and medicines, or for work.

With 191 deaths, Spain is Europe's worst-hit country after Italy.

In France, where 91 people have died, cafes, restaurants, cinemas and most shops are now shut.

Italy, which has recorded more than 1,440 deaths, began a nationwide lockdown on Monday."...Spain and France impose sweeping new restrictions

GO INTO THE STREETS FOLKS. Visit bars, restaurants, shopping malls, CHURCHES and demand that your schools re-open. NOW! If government doesn’t stop this foolishness...STAY IN THE STREETS. END GOVERNEMNT CONTROL OVER OUR LIVES. IF NOT NOW, WHEN? THIS IS AN EXPLOITATION OF A CRISIS.

Trump claims coronavirus is under control -- contradicting reality and his own top expert
America's top infectious diseases expert is warning that hundreds of thousands of Americans could die unless every citizen joins an effort to blunt the coronavirus pandemic -- only to be contradicted by President Donald Trump, who insists the virus is under "tremendous" control.
The fresh sign of Trump's unwillingness to accept the full, sobering reality of the outbreak came as an anxious America knuckles down to its new self-isolating reality. The country is bracing for the full fury of the virus that is already escalating sharply and is set to subject the foundations of basic life — the nation's health care, economic and political systems — to a fateful test.
The number of US infections raced up to at least 3,485, including 65 deaths, up more than 500 cases in a day and up from a case load of 457 a week ago, showing how the crisis, that may not reach its peak for weeks, is accelerating.

I think panicking has a lot to do with government. Most panic is based on uncertainty. If people don't trust their government to keep things running smoothly, they panic.

I wrote to Trump quite early on in his term. I told him what I would like to be able to trust him. I said I wished if he said something, I could believe what he was said was true. He probably didn't see my letter, and he surely has not learned the value of earning the trust of the people.

I understand his motive for saying some of the things he said earlier. He was trying to calm people, trying to avoid people panicking. His motive was right; but he did it wrong when a few days later we found out he lied. That eroded trust. He went for a short term gain and lost in the long term.

He also said in his inauguration speech he wanted to the president of all the people, not just of those who voted for him. I didn't know whether to believe him. I hoped he meant it. He didn't. Partisan bickering only got worse. The approval ratings of many presidents go up over time. His hasn't. He continues to appeal to his base and to them alone. Other people don't trust him, they don't like him. He missed the opportunity to pick up more support and to increase the base of people who trusted him. Almost no one who voted against him in 2016 is now for him. The opposite isn't true, at least not where I live. Farmers are going bankrupt here in Pennsylvania. His promises to them did not come true. He also promised the people of Pennsylvania that he'd bring back manufacturing jobs. He hasn't. I have a friend whose father works in manufacturing. That company is struggling to survive. People are worried it may go under and they'll be out of work.

Trump promised to bring back manufacturing in Pennsylvania. He didn’t. Will it cost him?

Broken promises add up over time. People lose faith in leaders when they can see they lied. We see something similar happening in American relations with other countries. Other world leaders do not trust Trump. Alliances are crumbling.
Do you trust the media? They are caught in lies constantly.

Lack of information has led to hoarding and Americans are fighting over paper towels in stores.

No, media obsession and misinformation has led to this.

Agree. It is already happening.

For example, Trump tried to stop Americans from learning about the epidemic, by ordering all federal employees to clear anything with Pence. He lied repeatedly about how serious it was, calling it a "hoax." The resulting distrust (only about a third of Americans now think Trump can be trusted to tell the truth about the epidemic) led to rumors, hording and huge sell-offs on Wall Street.

And then, unexpectedly, he did a complete about-face, and declared extraordinary measures.
Over the course of a week, as leaders across the nation raced ahead of a conflicted president, Trump swung from resistance to capitulation — transforming his tone and executing extreme measures to combat a widening crisis.
From complacency to emergency: How Trump changed course on coronavirus

And because he got so many things about his policy wrong in his address to the American people, he made things worse, once again.
  • In announcing new restrictions on travel from Europe, Trump inaccurately said that the U.S. would suspend “all travel from Europe” for the next 30 days, excluding the U.K. In fact, the policy exempts other nations as well, and only applies to 26 so-called Schengen Area countries.
  • Trump wrongly said that the European travel prohibitions would also pertain to a “tremendous amount of trade and cargo.” Goods are not affected by the policy.
  • Referring to an earlier meeting about coronavirus-related health insurance coverage, the president incorrectly said that industry leaders had agreed to “waive all copayments for coronavirus treatments.” Those leaders only agreed to no copayments for coronavirus testing.
  • The president repeated the disputed claim that his decision to impose restrictions on travel to and from China was a “life-saving move.” Experts say that determination can’t be made without more data.
  • Trump said his administration has cut red tape “to make antiviral therapies available in record time,” without saying how soon. At best, an antiviral drug might be ready for production in June.
FactChecking Trump's Coronavirus Address

And the American people don't trust him to tell the truth about the crisis? Go figure.

There aren't many things you can make better by lying about them, and this definitely wasn't one of them.

Sadly and mostly because of Trump and right-wing media, the pandemic has become a political issue and a loyalty test for conservatives. I think I mentioned earlier how the right's history of science denial might make them more vulnerable, and sure enough:

GOP, Fox News have waged war on science. With coronavirus, will their aging fans pay the price? | Will Bunch

Democrats are twice more likely (61 percent) than Republicans (30 percent) to say they plan to stop attending large gatherings...There’s a similar Democrat-Republican divide over canceling travel plans ( 47-23 percent), a belief that daily life will change (56-26 percent), and worries that they or a family member might contract coronavirus (68-40 percent).

I'm old and at risk. I'm not going to worry about it; I've had a great life and God has been more than good to me. But I'm not going to be a fool about it, either. I'll play the odds that favor me.

Because they follow medical advice during a pandemic? o_O

Yep. Remember, in high school , there was always someone who tried to get status, challenging others to do stupid things, by calling them "chicken?" Some things never change.

Think of it as nature culling the herd.
