It astounds me that the meaning of this text is not obvious namely, to have Gods words present in our thinking and in our doing. Blindness is evident when boxes with scriptures inside are strapped to the forehead or the hand.

Clearly not, because the command begins with "and you have my words in you heart", and then says, "you shall bind my words amidst your eyes". Even the Messiah fulfilled this command of the Torah, which is why he pointed out the tefillin of the Pharisees, who they made wide, to be perceived as more righteous.

This command is for everyone who wishes to become set apart. Without set-apartness no man can inherit the kingdom of God.

The later part of the text is an underpinning and a reiteration of the former.....that also is obvious.
Maybe they should have strapped the whole torah to themselves....no chance of making a mistake!.
One could apply a Forest Gump statement......stupid is as stupid does. Missing the point in the face of the obvious all the while justifying ones position has got to be the epitome of a darkened understanding.

Regarding the OP,

There is a figurative/symbolic meaning for this...see Romans 10:8.

Also, consider Romans 7:6...we are not bound by the letter but as Christians, we are obedient to the spirit of the law.

This is why God put the tablets of stone in the Ark of the Covenant. It was a picture of how God's Word would come to live in our hearts under the New Covenant in Jesus' Blood by the Holy Spirit. One is not a jew who is one outwardly, but he is a Jew who is one inwardly. Circumcision is of the Heart, not the outward keeping of the Law. For no man will be justified by keeping the Law, but only by Faith in the Son of God. Those who have their hope in the Law of Moses will be condemned by the Law of Moses because Moses pointed to Christ. Those who have their Hope in Jesus Christ will never be put to shame because their hope is in God.

The command of the tefillin was indeed given for set-apartness. You do not know what set-apartness means. Just as a police officer sets himself apart from ordinary citizens by putting on a uniform, so in likewise manner God has given commands in his Torah to set apart his people from everyone else on earth. This is why without set-apartness no one can see God, because set-apartness through the commands of the Torah is required. It is not optional. The reality is that "the word is night thee, in thy mouth and in thy heart" and that this is the righteousness of faith.

As Jesus said, "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and platter but inwardly you are full of ravening and wickedness. Did not He who made the outside of the cup and platter also make the inside? Cleanse what is on the inside, so that what is on the outside may also be clean" (my paraphrase).

By being focused on the outside, and looking to outward rituals and observances as being your salvation, you are failing to clean the inside of the cup and platter.

The tefillin is not a shadow command, which is why in relation to that command the Torah also commands that the words of God be placed on the doorposts and gates, which are mezuzah. Why is it so difficult for you people to obey what God commands? You do not want to obey, and think that your mere belief without obedience will somehow result in justification.

I do not sell tefillin. Tefillin is not a burdern, not resting on the Shabbath and not killing a lamb every year on the Passover are, for disobeying these commands brought the death penalty under mandate of the Torah, whereas the command of the tefillin did not, hence the reason those commands were heavy burdens to the people of God, which are specifically no longer required under the new covenant. You know nothing of Torah, and your own stubbornness and refusal to obey darkens your understanding even more.

If there is no death penalty for not wearing tefilin in the Torah, then God is not going to mete out the death penalty for it in eternity unless the person is seeking to be justified by the law; in which case the wages of sin is indeed death.

But if anyone is in Christ, we have the gift of God which is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Also, tefilin is not required under the new covenant as far as I can see in my reading of the New Testament.

A true believer is set apart by, and with the Holy spirit in their heart and mind (forehead) and in their works (hand(s)). They are sealed or marked in their forehead and the hand. This is scriptural. Although physical representations and symbols attached to their bodies are only symbols and the foreshadowing of being set apart in the spirit. This was a ritual under the ‘old’ or original Covenant.

For those saved under the grace and gospel of salvation through the Messiah, we are individually holy, in spirit, and not because of any performed cyclical ceremony and actions of an OT high priest or any NT ‘holy’ man or a priest, rescinding our sins temporarily for a period of time.

If set-apartness in the outward man did not matter, then our actions would not matter, but they do. As such, we must set ourselves not only in the body, through the command of God on how to set apart the body, but also in the inward man, which is done by the airflow of God, which cuts away sin in the inward man.

Believing in the Messiah without obedience to the commands of God will not grant you the set-apart airflow. You deceive yourself, hence, "and you gives his set-apart airflow to those who obey him".
